Any thoughts/comments?

I can get the surplus .308 Aussie stuff cheaper locally (and on stipper clips/badoliers for that fun 5 round charger loading!), but my gut tells me that the 2004 Lake City sutff will be more consistent and accurate....

My $0.02, it's up to your budget.  The Australian (and Portugese) surplus gets good reviews.   Decisions, decisions . . . .

The Australian ammo works great in my LRB, I wish I had more of it

Awesome, just what I wanted to hear.

I can get it for even cheaper than Ammoman's Lake City stuff from a local shop!

$45 out the door for 200 rounds on stripper clips in bandoliers in ammo cans doesnt' sound too bad, does it?  It is even cheaper if I buy 4 ammo cans at once.

Just be aware that the Aussie ammo in the bandoliers is early 80s production while the blister packs were made in the 90s.

It is still very good ammo, I have both.  Accuracy is equal to the gun and both are good.  The bandoliers are from the 60s that have been repacked with newer ammo.  Buy as much as your wife will let you and your wallet can handle.

Haha!  I have no wife!  I'll just sell my chairs and sit on ammo cans at the kitchen table!

The South African 308 is good stuff also 22 bucks for 140 rounds is a decent price. My Fal and Garand loves it.

Dawg,

Where are you getting Aussie surplus locally? Australian is excellent, my M1A and FALs gobble it up. Nice tight groups. The advantage of the current LC is that it is FMJ. For the range, Australian is tough to beat.

I have shot up a bunch of Argetine which is nice and hot but not as tight as Australian, LC or Port.

Patriot,

Info sent via IM on the Aussie ammo.  The place may have SA too, IIRC.  Also sent you an IM concerning the T57 mags...

Dawg from shooting both I would have to say get whichever one is the least expensive at the time you decide to purchase.

I can get a three shot group that I can cover with a dime using the Aussie in my rem 700.

I can get the Aussie for about $0.22 a round on strippers with badonliers and ammo cans, and South African battlepacks for about $0.20 a round.  If they are both as accurate as everyone says I will stack it deep, or at least as deep as funds allow!

www.aimsurplus.com has South African R1M1 (7.62X51) for alot better price than what you posted.

Australian surplus 308 is outstanding ammo.

The Ausie may be berdan primed but the overall quality is better than the LC. Put a magnet to the LC, there is steel in the projectiles. The Ausie (and SA) is copper and lead only.

That would be great, except for the fact AIM will not ship to IL due to our strange FOID card laws, even though it is legal to send it here...

[ETA]  Well I'll be tarred and feathered, it appears AIM has changed their ammo shipping policy to IL since the last time I checked their site.  Looks Like I can get it from them after all...

Looks like I will pick up one can of Aussie .308 so I can get some stripper clips and baondliers and one battlepack of SA so I can see how it shoots.  If the SA works real well I'll just order a whole 980 can of the stuff from AIM!

Turns out the local SA stuff wasn't $35 per 140. it was actually $28 per 140 including tax.  Sweet.

Does anyone have a source for the Australian surplus ammo.  I think the last stuff I picked up was stamped ADI.

Thanks,
John
