Load #1
Intended use: training, plinking, varmint killin', and reduced course Highpower competition Notes\Comments: Reloder 15 is slow for this combination of bullet weight and case capacity, hence the 27.0 grains fills a Winchester case to the bottom of the neck. More gunpowder to 27.4 grains is safe, but spills before the bullet is seated as it fills the case to the top of the neck. In my experience 26.8 grains produces too little pressure to seal the case well, resulting in excess soot on the case shoulders. Cases are generally sized with a 0.245 inside diameter bushing through three loads, then 0.244 after that. Cartridge headspace is set 0.0015 to 0.002 inches, or about 1.7XX from the case head to the 0.330 inch diameter datum on the shoulder. Cartridge/Caliber: .223 Rem Case manufacturer: Winchester Case length: 1.75 to 1.76 inches Bullet manufacturer: Sierra Bullet weight and type: 52 grain MatchKing Powder type: Reloder 15 Powder charge weight: 27.0 to 27.4 grains OAL: 2.25 to 2.26 inches Primer: Remington 7 1/2 Firearm tested in: AR based across the course rifle, Lilja 7 twist 3 groove barrel 24 inches long Chrono data (Avg, ES, SD): 3200+ fps Load #2 Intended use: training, plinking, varmint killin', and Highpower competition Notes\Comments: Reloder 15 is just about optimum for bullets in the 69 grain weight range. This load is warm, don't load 25.0 grains in your rifle without testing lighter charges first. Once safety has been established you will likely find that this is an accurate load in your rifle. Cartridge/Caliber: .223 Rem Case manufacturer: Winchester Case length: 1.75 to 1.76 inches Bullet manufacturer: Sierra Bullet weight and type: 69 grain MatchKing Powder type: Reloder 15 Powder charge weight: 25.0 to 25.2 grains OAL: 2.26 inches Primer: Remington 7 1/2 Firearm tested in: AR based across the course rifle, Lilja 7 twist 3 groove barrel 24 inches long Chrono data (Avg, ES, SD): ~2800 fps |

Cartridge/Caliber: .223 Remington Case manufacturer: Lake City 08 Case length: SAAMI Minimum Bullet manufacturer: Hornady Bullet weight and type: 55 grain FMJ With Cannelure Powder type: H335 Powder charge weight: 25.0 grains OAL: 2.25 Primer: CCI 400 Firearm tested in: BCM M16A4 Chrono data (Avg, ES, SD): Unknown (But it does track well with the BDC on my TA31F-G out to 400 meters, haven't tried the load any further out) NOTES: Safe load, easy on brass. For best results, use the CCI450 primer. The CCI 400 has a rather thin cup and flattens easily, giving the impression of high pressure signs when in reality, its a very safe load. The load is from the Speer Reloading Manual. |

My SS-109 loads
I developed these loads by working up from the start load from Speer's 62 gr FMJ bullet data. Speer #12 and on up. I worked up past these loads until I got pressure signs and then dropped my load back 1/2 grain. This is what you see here. No pressure signs in my rifle, be sure to drop these loads 10% to start your work up. I consider these Maximum loads in my AR. Notes: These are 2 moa loads at 100 yds, because of the bullet. I use heavily marked pulled bullets and see very little difference between these and unmarked bullets. Intended use: Practice, and blasting. Cartridge/Caliber: .223 Rem Case manufacturer: LC Nato cross, I don't sort by year. Case length: 1.750 Bullet manufacturer: Pulled Military bullet. I get them from Wideners, and Hitech. Both are listed up in Links. Bullet weight and type: 62 gr FMJBTSC (steel core) Powder type: BLC2 Powder charge weight: 26.0 grs OAL: Seated to mid cannelure, light crimp with Lee FCD (factory crimp die) Primer: Win SR or Wolf SRM. I re-worked up these loads when I switched from Win SR to Wolf SRM. Either primer is GTG in my AR. Firearm tested in: Home built AR, 16 inch heavy barrel, 1 in 9 twist. Chrono data: don't know |
