With the current powder shortages you may be stuck buying mil surplus/pull down powder. Not the best for accuracy but it is cheap and available.

222 of pulled 860 or 872 works, or if you can find it, 225 grains of Reloader 50.
Of course, work your way up to those loads, if you can find the powder for sale ? SJC |

5010 was pulldown powder, don't think it's been made for decades. It was great powder for reloading with, would be nice to have some more.
At least H50 is back on the market, hopefully they'll keep making it. Would be nice to have a couple more companies making powder for .50's. |

What powder would be best for getting maximum velocity out of a shorter barrel? I'm looking to get some put away for the future

Vihtavuori 20N29 is a great powder for 50 BMG, the drawback is the price!
I got great results using 222 grs of it out of my AR-50. No problems sending an AMAX projo 2000+ yards! H50BMG and Reloader 50 are both good also and would buy these to stock up on. If you can find surplus, buy it, it goes fast when you start loading. |

I've still got a jug or two here from when it was common and plentiful. |
