I rarely see transferables for sale anywhere except online (and in one of my local shops). For you guys who have been collecting for awhile, are there any places that you randomly or routinely check out to see if you’ll get lucky? Local estate sales? Newspaper classifieds? MG-shoots?

ETA: I have what I want and am not looking to buy. Was just curious if anyone had any good stories.

You can't sleep either?
I have never seen any transferable pieces other than on line or Shotgun news etc.
I just think there is too much involved in selling these items, if it is a result of someone passing, the survivor most likely has no idea about how to sell them.
Although I once saw a MP 44 at a garage sale!

Only place I've seen is at a large gun show. The prices were high at the time too (7k for a M11/9 when I had bought one for 5k not long before). I'm sure there was room to negotiate.

I have gotten a few guns via the normal big dealers, a few from auctions sites, but all the good deals I have made have been via local word-of-mouth.

Get plugged into your local MG scene and find out who is selling what.

Word of mouth, networking, establishing a reputation of credibility in a respective community etc. will all lead to fair prices from other reputable sources when it comes to buying rare and expensive items.

The few I've seen at a local gun shops were usually way over priced.

If you have the time attend as many MG shoots as possible and get to know ppl but keep in mind you might be spendings thousands of dollars traveling, renting MG, etc.... in order to find a deal that only saves you a few hundred under the going rate.

IMO searching online is the quickest, easiest, gives you the best selection and there is enough competition to keep prices down. With that said good deals go quick you have to search often and have the cashing in hand ready to buy. A dealer isn't going to wait around while you sell your ATV or get permission from you wife when there are a half dozen ppl in line behind you ready to buy who do have the funds.

Got mine since I did the network for the FFL's house and business.  Also purchased several other guns from him.

He called and said that he had an estate sale and it was for way below normal price.  I burned rubber on the way to his place.

I buy from well known NFA dealers. I also intentionally buy out of State in order to avoid my State sales tax at (8.5%). The Dealer to Dealer wait is only a week or two.

The form 3 approval is very fast now, I bought a suppressor and the dealer to dealer transfer was approved and delivered to my local dealer in 2 weeks. So really no incentive to buy MGs in state other than to see in person but shouldn't be any issues if buying from a reputable dealer.

One needs to check their own state laws with regard to 'sales' or 'use' tax on out of state purchases, even those made over the internet.  I happen to live in one of the half dozen or so states that do require in state tax payment.  In Michigan, state tax payment is required on purchases of $1000 or more.

MHO, YMMV, etc.
