He was indeed referring to the North Hollywood Bank Robbery, which was mentioned in a Discovery Channel show on body armor.

Here's the rest of the story: Attempts were made to sue B&B because they failed to do background checks or enforce the PRK (then) 15-day waiting period before handing out the guns.  Eventually, due to heavy protests, these suits were dropped.

B&B is now out of business; largely killed by the constant stream of new gun laws in the PRK over the last couple of years.
