Heard the RIS will but would rather get the RAS so if I get an M4 upper I can still use them.

That's correct, RIS will work on either while RAS is only for M4 profiled barrel (thin inside handguard, heavy from front sight tower). RIS index numbers start from the front sight counting up, RAS index numbers start from the rear (14), right where some numbered flat tops leave off (at 12)
