The government will and should be interested forever if the firearm should ever try to find its' way into the U.S.

There is one Southern California police agency that owns two US Marine Corp M60's.

A teenage girl driving her father's (a MGSGT) car was pulled over. There were two fully functional M60's in the cars trunk which the police confiscated. Being a military town, the police contacted Camp Pendelton authorities. The Marine Corps official response was those two machineguns were destroyed. The police asked if the Marines wanted them back. The Marines replied they could not possibly want them back, because they no longer existed, they were destroyed.

I don't know either way whether this gun was stolen or not, but just because a rifle is US property marked does not mean it was stolen. Quite a few rifles have been surplused and later sold on the civilian market.

When I was in the Gulf a number of years back, some guy at one of the Maintainance units that took an M-60 from his units Armory and tried to sell it in downtown Clarksville.  He went to jail.  Ponyboy is right though I have saw RR M16's marked US Property.
