For those who can't afford a new AR, which would you pick?

I like the trigger and finish better on the Mini-14.
I like the durability & better magazines of the AK rifles.

I think I will take the Mini-14. The SKS is a nice rifle too, but a little too expensive these days.

Use mini-14's at work.....hate em.  They dont hold up at all.  The sights are all lose and have seen two KB in the last two years.  Go with the AK, dead reliable.  Not as accurate, but with a decent sight system, it will make a much better rifle.  Think I'll buy one.

My SLR-95 (AK) is more accurate than my mini-14 was. I sold the mini not long after buying the AK for that reason.

an AK. Why would I want a malfunctioning    mini-14, with overpriced mags that dont work.

This is a joke right? From the options on the list, AK hands down. Though maybe in the 5.45 instead of the 7.62X39 (you didn't specify).

Though FN-FAL wasn't on your list. With the wieght of 7.62X30 plus steel AK mags, I think I'd go with the FN-FAL if I had the option.

Other than that though, AK no doubt about it!

Get an AK.  The SKS mags are too clunky.

AK in a heartbeat, Ruger makes some damn nice stuff, but the mini-14/30's are total POS. Dont mean to offend anyone, just speaking from my personal experiences with both weapons systems.

AK with lots of mags.

Choice from the list was an SKS.

Reasons:

1.  Cheapest of all listed
2.  Most accurate of all listed
3.  Cheapest of all listed
4.  Reliable as the AK
5.  Cheapest of all listed
6.  10 round clips are fast loading and cheaper than magazines
7.  Cheapest of all listed

Not even a fair comparison. You are compairing an entire family/series of rifles, "AKs" to a specific model "Mini-14".

Either include the Mini-14's ancestors (M1 Garand, M1-Carbine, M14) or narrow the scope of the "AK" option to a specific models such as SAR-3 or MAK-90.

I voted for the AK because my $290 SAR-1 shot circles around my brothers $475 mini-14 ranch rifle.

Best cheap substitute for the AR?

That's easy, Daewoo DR200 or Armalite AR180B.

The SKS I have is capable of shooting 1.5-2 MOA at 100 yards.  That's about equivalent to the CETME in terms of group size.  Most of the CETMEs I've seen (about 6, including one I owned for a month) have serious problems with sights though.  Mine shot a foot high and foot and half to the left.  I could never get the sights to zero completely, it ended up shooting 4" to the left and 2" high.  I don't like weapons that are a bitch to get to shoot point of aim.

The CETMEs also have QC problems that won't hinder the SKS design.  The shittiest SKS will still go bang reliably, whereas the CETME might not always do that.

Between an AK and Mini...

What is to decide? Mini-14 is a joke compared to an AK...

The SKS is still the best bang for the buck rifle.

The Mini-14 vs. AK thread is reborn from the ashes!!!.............God knows what we are in for now! ......given the selection criteria.....go with the AK.......just don't buy Chicom crap.........

I agree.  I bought mine for $109.00 brand new and a ton of steel core ammo for about $.09 a round.  More accurate than the mini-14 I had.  Has never once (in 900 rds) malfunctioned.  Trigger is horrible though and I think the $109 days are long gone.

I voted for that AK, because my friend has a mini 30 and it's very tempermental. I have no experience with an SKS so I could vote for that.

I know the AK is reliable not accurate and cheap. But why isn't the AR180 on the list. The AR180 is the true poorman's AR.

Probably because the AR180 is ultra-rare now...I've seen them but finding one is like finding a Galil or preban Valmet.......nice toys but really expensive now.....back in the 80's before I even owned an AR or three I'd agree that the AR-180 was the poor man's AR. Looks like its more collectable now.

Hands down a rifle from the AK-47 family of firearms would be my pick,I'd lean more to the AK-74 though.Mags are cheaper ammo can pretty much be found any where for about $0.10 a round.Beat it to death forget to clean it drag it in the mud,it'll never let you down. But don't over look the sks,or if one could be found a good SKS model D (takes AK mags). To realy throw some heavy lead one can't pass up the M1A
