Big companies do this all the time. Colt has done it a couple times so has S&W, Winchester, and others. Remington is just one asset in a big conglomerate.  This is more likely an accounting strategy than the death throes of a dying brand.

In a sense "Remington" as an institution died more than a decade ago. However, with that kind of name recognition (like Winchester) the brand will live on forever (offerings, origin of mfg. and quality may will vary). The name "Remington" regardless of the quality of the product will always sell more guns than "Cerberus Capital Management".
