What do you do when, most if not all the new firearms coming out, just dont do it for you?

Take example, in my opinion, for me (is that enough disclaimers?);

*SCAR- I like the idea, but my preference is not 5.56. The SCAR-H's (which somewhat interest me) have been a "couple months" away for some time. And $$$$$

*ACR- I'm not going there; except I'll say too much plastic for me, and it's 5.56. And way too $$$$$ for what you get.

*AUGs/clones- Shot them. Just not impressed. It's 5.56. Price is decent though.

*FS2000 - Never shot one, but handled several. Too much plastic for me. And...... it's 5.56.

*PS90- No. Just no. At least the civi version anyway.

*Kel-Tec RFB- It's 7.62N !! But, I'm very 'iffy' about bullpups in general, and too much plastic for me.

*Piston AR's-  Meh. I think a whole re-designed weapon would be better than making something it wasnt supposed to be.


As far as the more common, and 'been around awhile' guns:

*AR's- I like them. I know them far too well. I can get them in any flavor, any caliber (almost). I've just gotten so 'meh' about them, even decked-out rifles. I even have a semi MK18/Mod 1 SBR that I've come to be 'meh' about.... Now, the Knights 308 carbines....mmmmmmm. Love what I see. But the I still get severe, very severe, sticker shock when I contemplate one....

*AK's- I like them. I've owned/shot just as many as I have AR's. But I cant build them (no proper equipment or know-how). And while I've never had the first issue in reliability; the accuracy, while good, has to be just not 'good enough' for me. I own several models, and for some reason, I've even become 'meh' over them as well.

*FAL's- I like them. Owned 3 at a while ago. Thought they were cool, but somehat heavy. I didnt like the accuracy, but appreciated the reliablity. Like the DSA's, but again, not comfortable with $$$$ for mediocre accuracy. And the fact that sourcing mags has become more of challenge.

*HK/clones- I never owned an actual HK, but owned a PTR at one time. Liked it. Accurate, reliable. But too heavy with that lard barrel it has. Not comfortable spending $2k-2500 for a 30-20 yr old weapon, especially since smiths' are getting rarer, and have months of wait time for work. And I wont trust my life (in the event) to some cobbled together clone from lower tier builders.

*M14/clones- Owned a Springer M1A a few years ago. Liked it, but at the time, (during the ban), mags were way out of my price range, so I traded it for an FAL. The newer Springers, well, I have inspected a few new ones, and I really dont like the look of the rec'rs and parts. Not paying the money for a SEI either. Not that it's not worth it, it's just if I'm gonna pay that, well, might as well save a lil more for the Knight's that I reeeeealy want.

*NFA stuff- No desire for FA, and I dont feel the need to go through the hassle of BATF, the wait, and the money, for a supressor that I should be able to go buy at Academy just like a set of ear plugs. SBR's are cool, but I still much prefer rifles and carbines.

*Precision rigs- Well, I like bolt guns. But the one's that fit my needs, are very $$$$, and again, I think, I might as well get a Knight's or a damn .50 bmg.


So what gives guys?? Do I just need to step back, further evaluate (which I have done ad nauseum), and go from there? Have I just reached a plateau with firearms, where only the most $$$$$ will do?

Is there something I am missing here? Money would not be too much of an issue, if I could decide on a certain 'path' of firearms I suppose, and go from there. I love firearms in general, but I would say that most of my interest lies somewhere between precision shooting and handguns, with a slight mix for up close and personal, aka the tacticool word " CQB".

Don't get rid of your guns because you'll come back to them. Just take a break and leave the world of firearms for a bit. Love something else for a while.

You like bolt action? Build a precision rifle with the Remington 700 as the base.

Funny you mention working on cars...... I have ben trying to get my Cummins diesel back running for almost 3 months now. I have learned far more than I ever wanted to know about diesels, including the fact that it really sucks to have to work on one............

Put the rifles away for a while and go play w/ a shotgun. At the local club, we have a game called MazClays. It is the most fun, I have every had w/ a shotgun.

I don't see you mentioning XCR. It's a modern piston driven AR/AK type rifle, with plenty of metal.

You may also have to face the music that modern guns will have more and more polymer so you'll have to stay old school if you want all metal components.

Start chasing younger women!

Actually, have you ever shot some older rifles? Try playing with old Remington rolling blocks, or maybe a Marlin lever action. If you have never been exposed to the older rifles, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Of course, chasing younger women can get you pleasantly surprised as well....

I agree with you.  I have an AR15, accurate, does the job, fun and was inexpesive to shoot.  Why pay a bunch of money for something you don't need.  I like long range precision rifles, have one in 308, don't see a need for a 300 win mag, 338 ect, I couldn't afford to shoot the thing.  I have an AK, it is alright, not as accurate as I like, but atleast still cheap enough to shoot alot.  45 auto, I love 45 autos, one good one is all I need (have a wilson).  Reload (when I can find primers, so still cheap enough to shoot).  XD this and sig that, whatever.  I'll just stick to the ones I like now.  I never shoot my 44 mag, my 45/70 stainless guide gun, my 300 win mag, or even my 22's for that matter.  I have thought about thinning out my heard, but have an aversion to selling them off.  For fun I shoot my AR15, AK47, 308, and 45 auto.  I shoot all spring, summer, and fall, can still afford to shoot these.  Don't really need anything else.

Not every gun you own has to be a defense/SHTF gun, you know...

Basically I feel your pain. I'm bored too. ACR prices gave me the WTF OMG YOUR NUCKING FUTS Attitude.  But I am going to hold uut to see if the ACR gives me the warm fuzzy. If it does well then I will have to jump the shark. If not then "Astro glide, lesbian porn, I will figure out the rest." I'll do that for a while when it gets boring then i'll go back to shooting the Glocks.

 Dave SRB has the right idea (about guns..), I would suggest this:
 Go rent the video "Quigley Down Under" & watch it ...
 Look up an old crop duster down there near you by the name of Rick Mulhern (also an old high power competitor). & ask him if he would introduce you to the fine art of 1000 yd. shooting with a Sharps rifle.. nothing beats putting a 550 gr. bullet that you cast yourself into an 8" X ring at that distance using iron sights!
 
- Oh yeah, once you have done that, get yourself to a ranch in Forsyth, MT on Fathers Day & pit yourself against 600 or so like minded Sharps Shooters!

I have a couple. A 1911, Sig 228, and looking to get a 220 or another 1911 soon. But I've mainly been kinda distraught over rifles....

Maybe you should switch over to hanguns for a while. Maybe look to add a 92fs and a Hi Power to the collection? A good revolver? If you don't hate them, I don't think a handgun collection is complete without a Glock, but I'm a fanboy.

I feel much as you do, and my collection leans towards the modern.  I don't mind plastic on guns, and feel the gun manufacturers have done a good job of getting out cool stuff for us to enjoy with the rules they have to deal with.

What really helps me is keeping a gun log.  I can look at it and see what i fired and when, then decide whether to keep a certain firearm.  Unless it is collectible, then I make an exception.

I hate handloading, so I don't expand there.

Collect ammo, even if just to shoot.  

Your interests may take you to get a C&R and enjoy the classic firearms and pistols; the unusual, and even some full auto.  Plus you get great discounts.  I recently bought a Webley cheap from Century (which iIalways wanted but could never shell out for) fired, it, and didn't like it all that much...so was glad I got it on the cheap with my C&R.

Restoring older beat up stuff is also very fun...so restoring newer beat up stuff should be great, too.

Do you already build your own AR's or Ar10 pattern rifles?  I'm almost there and it seems like another way to advance the interest. cheap, accurate, metal 308's.

Training courses––CQB or long range––is a great idea.   If you don't have land to shoot on (private), that is very fun (steel, reactive targets, tannerite, propane cylinders, etc), and really what keeps me enjoying shooting.  Of course, we have been raided on occasion as a terrorist training camp and now tell the local PD that we are shooting our class 3's etc all day on private property.  So be sure to look into local land use issues before buying or renting.  My local gun club had long range shooting (out to 1000) yards, black powder and conventional, but most of the guys are older, snobbish fudds who are immersed in NRA disciplines and have no other place to shoot, so keep moving the club down a more retrictive route with public friendly black powder and NRA events.

I have found that, finacially, I must limit my hobbies.  So my hobbies are guns and family.  I gave up golf, partly due to expense, partly because I just was not getting good at it like I was with guns.  I did love the beautiful courses I played on.  That would be perfect:  gun games in beautiful settings, like golf.  I think there are competitions like that out there.

Silencers or other Title II goodies?  They put a stop to regular ol BRD right quick!

I'm reading your post OP and I can tell you wouldn't mind a Kel Tec RFB in 7.62. It's got metal where it needs it. It's pretty robust polymer. Take another look at them.  Sturdy damn rifle that nice and compact in 7.62 great for hunting or a good backpacking rifle.



Don't invite "the man" into your life for an SBR when you can get nice bullpups without the negatives of an SBR.
