Probably, but thank God we live in a country where we don't have to show a need in order to possess certain things. We can go to work, earn money, and buy what we want.

Sorry the intent of your post was misconstrued.

I prefer a carbine to a shotgun, and a .357 Magnum to a semiauto for bare-bones defense.

No, I just that's the basics for self-defense. Feel free to chime in your basic SD arsenal.

For me, it's the pump-action and the 1911.

For others, it may be the AR and Glock.

Of course, I want every frickin gun in the world.

For general solo scumbag protection I'd agree with that. I'd feel pretty comfortable with my 870 and Sig220 (.45).

Going into a known hostile environment I certainly want a rifle though...

At that point you need a Barrett M82A1 and some SLAP rounds

I think the OP envisioned this thread in the context of realistic, non-SHTF, non-TEOTWAWKI situtations. In the former, a 1911 and pump will do just fine. In the latter I would absolutely rather have my FALs, XCRs, or AR15s than my 870s.

Sometimes unassing the area is not an option.....For in home defense a shotgun and good quality pistol is fine, but once I step outside to face danger you'll see a rifle in my hand....

You are well armed w/ a shotgun and a .45, I prefer an AR for any distance and the wife shoots it MUCH better. Both are top choices for HD

Never been a fan of the shotgun for defense use.

All of the drawbacks of a large weapon with none of the real benefits of using a carbine.

As someone else said, a shotgun is for killing birds, and opening doors.
In a defensive role, there's nothing a shotgun does that a rifle cant do better.

Except maybe shoot buckshot, my AR does not shoot buckshot worth a damn. I think there is no difinative answer as to which is better for defense, shotgun or carbine. It comes down to what you can personally do with your chosen weapon. 9-30 caliber projectiles with a single pull of the trigger is fairly effective at stopping a threat. With the AR or similar weapon you have a higher magazine capacity and a higher velocity projectile.

If you believe in compromise, get yourself a Saiga with a 20 round drum. Then you have 12 gauge power with carbine capacity. Personally, inside the house, I am going to have a handgun. Capacity, manuverability, speed and retention are all strong points of the handgun. To each their own though, bottom line is you need to be able to rounds on target with whatever you decide to use.

It has also been proven that a 5.56 is less likely to kill people in the next room when compared to those 9 30cal. projectiles. It also penetrates less than .45 or 9mm ect. If you live in a house far away from other houses with no children then maybe a shotgun with 00 buck is better. But most of us have more than just a spouse in our house, or we live in urban areas....

Sure , shotguns have place in a support role, But why not primary ?

Sure , shotguns have place in a support role, But why not primary ?

This is home defense, not infantry combat. Inside of my house I have no need to make more than a 40 foot shot. If you house is large enough that you need to shoot a long distance you should have used some of your millions to hire security. I have more than enough long arms should the need arise to hold off a decent size force of poorly trained conscripts. But in reality if you go to check out a noise in the middle of the night what are you going to grab? Personally in the house, for me, it will probably be my Glock with a rail mounted flashlight. I am sure there are some here who would grab their sidearm, rifle, body armor, chest rig with mags, spare flashlight, granola bars and first aid kit and tactical PJs with built in tie off tourniquets in a fitting camo pattern. But seriously, being armed is usually enough to put the odds in your favor. I have not heard of any situations where the shotgun being used instead of a carbine have been the deciding factor in whether a person was able to defend their home.

For things that go bump in the night or post-hurricane protection, my main plan involves a 1911 and an 870. Once my AR is finished it will be in that plan as well.

For now I'm focusing on getting 12 gauge slugs and buckshot and .45 ACP FMJ and JHP since I don't have an upper yet.

I'll admit that I feel quite secure with a 1911 and a good 870 Police or Marine Magnum......but I feel 33 percent more secure with a good AR added to the mix .

Hardly. What you need is what you can use best for the job that fills it's requirements. A shotgun sure isn't it for me compared to carbine and I'd be a fool to choose one instead. Possibly a dead fool.

I don't care much for the 1911 either.
