My Best Friend wants a 16" .308 He wants a M1A Socom 2, but a guy at the range told us the gas system gave them problems... Is that true...

Would a 16"ar-10 or FN-fal variant be better?
He wants it to shoot close to 1 MOA
he wants to use it for home defense and deer-hunting out to 150-200max yards Most shots will be at or inside 100 yards.

Thanks Y'all

Of the six SOCOMs I know of personally, four have had problems.

I have an ArmaLite AR-10A4 carbine and love it.

He also wants somethign that will shoot 1MOA accuracy... is that possible with an AR-10A4?

obviously he only wants an auto right?

That's probably pushing it with a stock AR10 carbine. With a free floated match barrel it wouldn't be hard, though. The big question is what he wants to do with the gun? If he wants a match rifle, a longer barrel would be better, while if he wants a CQB carbine accuracy is not of the up-most importance.

EDIT: AR10 should be fine. Just saw the "home defense and hunting line". A two or even three MOA rifle should suffice for that!

Yes semi-auto... something that will do 1" or close at 100 yards, be good on deer out to 150-200 yards, and is a carbine. He will also use the gun for Home defense if given the chance.

I'm encouraging him to get a 6.8mm Rem spc Ar-15... But I don't think He is budging on the .30 caliber

More importantly was/is it possible with the M1A SOCOM, his original choice?

Seems like the criteria is shifting.

Inside this criteria, the Armalite AR-10A4 would perform just fine.

No problems as of yet.  I just have 300 rounds through it.

Well the cost was a problem

I thought it would be close with good optics and match ammo... If i am wrong about that please tell me!

What kind of accuracy do you get at 100 yards?

Match ammo will get you close, from what I have seen or the SOCOM and Scout.

In my experience it will get you close in a standard AR10A4 as well, and the AR-10 is easier, BY A LONG SHOT, to scope.

Agreed... The criteria isn't really changing... I think he just wants to have his cake and eat it too.
I am telling him to get a real assault rifle for CQB, and a real hunting rifle for hunting.

His dad ignorantly got him a Remington 710 .30-06 for Christmas. This isn't what he wants at all, but it will suffice for a decent gun. THe action is not smooth.

He decided on the m14 SOCOM for it's coolness, portability, point-ability, accuracy and reliablity.
Apparently from what I've read the reliability isn't as good as the full-length guns. Which is what I am encouraging him to get. but He is dead-set on a 16".

Yeah the more I look at it, a DMPS is the right gun for the job HE wants...
How does yours shoot Eli75?

Somebody tell me why you'd choose the armalite over the DPMS?

It shoots great.  It was really finicky when I first got it, it would only fire factory ammo.  Now that it's broken in, it shoots surplus just fine.

Why not just get the SCOUT instead of the SOCOM.

The barrel is a little longer, but not by much, cheaper, and reliable!

+1 on the BS call. I've just opened my 5th can of .308, that makes over 2k rounds so far and once broken in, My M1A has been near flawless. It's more accurate than my eyesight and has yet to not feed from a mag, be it OEM, surplus or the NIB from Ammoman.

I am very happy with DSA FAL 16". Feels great, more compact than a M1A Scout and a DPMS AP4 .308 ( lay all three side by side...DSA is shorter)

Makes a great deer hunting rifle. My Father shot a 8 point and a really nice 9 point buck last year with a DSA 16" with 3X9 Trjicon scope.

Other than that, a HK type rifle is great too.

Thanks for all the imput guys...

I think He's decided to go with the 18" DPMS Heavy Barrel...
He decided to get an AR-15 or Other smaller assault rifle for home defense...
Appreciate y'all's imput!

So DSA's really group 1" at 200 yards? that's incredible!

I may be new here, but that is some serious bullshit.
I've seen too many running great and enjoyed shooting the Socoms I got the chance to, plus having a 22inch barreled M1A myself that is running mostly SA parts, that's definite BS. Every company regardless of the products being made can make a bad one now and again.  Thinking that there all bad till the end of time is a little negative I'd say, completely opinionated and biased to the extreme, but I'm sure I'll read it again, as someone says it about every weapon out there eventually if they end  up having a problem one, but these days even if they just read someone else saying it.  After all, this is just the internet.

Having one of these in an 18 inch barrel, he might take a look at one too, but it's his choice in the end and I'm sure he'll be happy with it.http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/programming/expand.asp?Prodid=205
