If you took 1000 house holds in your town and surveyed them as to what type of long gun they owned what would it be and what round would it be chambered in?. Same for the Handgun.

Lets exclude shot guns for the time being...

Ex: Lever Action .30-.30 caliber

In a hand gun the same question if applicable.

Ex: .38 revolver

Quoted:
.22lr, the most popular by far.

+1

If you limit to centerfire then 9mm wins the handgun by a big margin.

I'd guess 223 for rifle.  It's as popular as any other hunting round. Throw in the black rifles and I think that gives it the edge.

You didn't ask but the 12 guage would be #1 for shotguns.

For centerfire rifles the .30-06 would be the most popular around here. Heck you can buy .30-06 ammo at some sandwich shops during hunting season around here!.   For pistols its really kind of hard, when Im at the range I see all kinds of guns not just what I would call  "common" , or "old folks" guns meaning like .38's or  9mm's.  I see alot of USP's, Glock .40's  +.45's etc. I really wouldnt know what the most popular in my area is. My local gun dealer did tell me he sold more 1911 style pistols last year than anything else. Of course thats just one store , and one year.

Other than 22LR, 30-06.  270 a fairly close second.

Not sure about handgun.  Maybe 38/357.
