I saw a JLD PTR91 at a fun show it looked really solid and well built.  Is this a good rifle or does it have major problems. I am looking for a 308 rifle to add to my collection.  I am willing to spend 1100 but not much more than that

Good rifle, for $1100 you can get the A3 version. Basic rifle is like $750.

Jensen Arms in Norther CO sells them.  They feel like a well built solid rifle.  Everything that I have heard and read about them has been very good.  The people who own them that I've talked to at the shop really like them!  I plan on picking one up.

If you can find a Greek SAR 3/8 it will cost of about $1200 for one in great shape.  I got a brand new one for that price. Why get a clone when you can get a contract model that is exactly the same as the original?  The finish is a little different in color but other then that you would never know the difference.  They will come up for sale once in awhile.  Most collectors will not be happy with a PTR or even a SAR.  HK91s can be had for around $1800+ depending on condition.

Shooters will not care either way.

Make sure you get a new production one. The early ones had some teething pains.

Now they seem like a well built solid rifle. One's on my list.

These are made on HK tooling to HK's original specifications.  Its as close to the real thing as anything else.

+1
HK sold the tooling and the specs to a company in Argentina JLD now owns them, its as good as picking up an HK for half the costs and you can buy parts to fix your HK's
I have one on my short wish list

Never shot one but while I was working at a gunshop I got to check one out. Really good part fit and seemed like a solid well built rifle, I'd even compare it to an ACTUAL HK as far as quality IMO

I guess thats why they are so much cheaper then the real thing.  You should make this argument at a HK site and see what happens.

I handled one in a gun store, pretty impressed. The only thing I can't stand about the things is that the butt stock is made out of cheesy, airsoft quality plastic. If you can swap out another foreign part for a US part and put in a real HK stock, you've got quite a rifle on your hands.

I bought a PTR-91 PBWB from Atlantic-Firearms .

It immidiatly took it's place as my favorite rifle ,
and the weapon I will reach for in any emergency.

Out of the box with Port surplus mine shot 1.5 inch
100 yard groups.
After a trigger job (which most MBRs could use BTW)
for $35.00 from Bill Springfield ,it
shoots right at MOA .
My groups are at or just under 1 inch at  100 yards with
Salt Lake Match.

Give it a 300 round brake in before passing judgement.

100 rounds at a time,than a thorough cleaning,repeat twice.

Afterwards the cocking handle gets slighly easier to unlock
and the chamber is worn in.
Mine shoots flawlessly .

I've owned quite a few rifle over the years, this is without a doubt my favorite.

In some ways it is BETTER than the original HK-91s.

The receiver has some reinforcements in it to prevent flexing ,
the welds are done finer than most originals I've seen ,and
the heavy match barrel is great to have to keep it accurate
when running hot.

To top it off ,look at that price tag.
No comparison .

I guess a Pinto and Porsche do the same thing.  You might want to ask someone like SteyrAug who is pretty much an expert on these rifles what he thinks.

I ran across three of them at my shooting club. ALL had issues. First one had failure to eject and deeply fluted the brass on the first round. Way too tight chamber???
Second one was very loose and had feeding problems with certain mags. The one it came with wouldn't feed more than 3 rounds without  jamming. Tried a HK aluminum mag and it feed without problems. Trigger group fit very loosely in the receiver.
Third one had a very loose fitting stock. An HK, hardly IMHO.

+1 on getting a Sar 3, 3/8 or 8.  I got a 3/8 for $900 LNIB last year.

Lugerman ,
were these rifles TRUE PTRs with a serial number over
1200 ?

JLD has sold more receivers  than they
have sold whole rifles.

The only way to definately tell it's a TRUE JLD build
is to call them and tell them your serial number
INCLUDING the letter/letters .
Preferably BEFORE shooting it ,so it can be returned.

Many builders have built on receivers that have the
JLD mark ,but these aren't JLD builds.

I discovered this when I purchased a rifle thinking it was a
JLD when actually only the receiver was there's.
I called JLD about a problem with a rifle and they told me to call the distributer
because only the receiver was their's.

The actual builder packed and sold it as if it
were though.

Their actual builds at lower serial numbers were made
with a polygonal bore that doesn't work well with some
surplus ammo.
They've since stopped using the polygonnal bores and
have designed  their own barrels which use a standard
rifling.

If you have any problem with a tue PTR ,call JLD.
They'll get it back to you within 2 weeks of receiving it,
fixed and tested.
Usually with some extra toys to make up for it.

If someone is having a problem with one and they haven't called,
tell them to call.

Aside from the sarcasm doc, would you mind sharing, in a positive, encouraging way, to what exactly you're referring? All reviews, including ones by members of this site, of JLD's finished rifle (the early ones had problems) are uniform in their praise.

LUGERMAN, do you know what date of production were the rifles you've seen?

thanks in advance.

cant wait for my bayonet to come  :)

Havent shot this rifle yet, but i must say, it is one of the finest rifles i have handled.  Everything is perfect on it.  If my century G3 works, I highly doubt i will ever have any problems with this one

I can't give you an honest answer on that. All I know is each rifle was purchased from Sarco at their store as we are in NJ.

the one i shot (a friend's) was nice

h/w his had brutal recoil (something about a missing buffer or something....) but it gave him ok groups and chunked his brass several yards off

does the PTR come w/ a chrome-lined bbl option?

You have to have an original HK beside a JLD to see them.

One area that's real obvious is around the mag well.
Especially on the more recently made models.

Other areas of the receiver have them to ,but without one
here to compare(or the right pics) I can't honestly tell
you exactly where they are.

Until recently I haven't handled an original for at least 10 years.

Another shooter I know showed me the differences between the
JLD PTR receiver and the original.
They are there ,I'm not familiar enough to get more exact.

He liked his PTR as well .
Now he'll keep his original in the safe and shoot the PTR .

The PTR also has a few other impovements.

Improved ergonomic cocking handle ,knurled adjustment knob,
all peep diopter (no V notch)  off the top of my head.

Oh ,and just to show there is still room for improvement,
I think the JLDs stocks are their ownly bad point.

I've heard their still attempting to get the equipment to make
stocks exactly like the originals.
The ones they currently use don't use the internal cross pins,
so you cant add a clip on buttpad or heavy buffer without first
getting an original HK butt stock.
I switched mine out.

Do you mean how the PTR-91s magwell is straight walled, whereas the HK91 is flared out at the front to aid in inserting a magazine?
Link Posted: 9/15/2005 7:55:50 AM EDT
[#27]
Actually I was referring to the rear are of the mag well.

I have not noticed weather or not it isn't flared.

I would have to lay on original beside it to tell.

I've not had any difficulty with fast reloads ,so
I don't think the mag well is completely strait.

If you install a Tac Latch II paddle release on the newer PTRs,
you have to grind off some material to get it to fit.

On the originals ,the Tac Latch just slides right in.

My understanding is that the slight reinforcements were made
because of the Heavy barrel.

[#28]
So, the PTR has a differently shaped semi-auto ledge?  I don't see how that would be any sort of improvement.
