What can anybody tell me about the history of this ammo? I think I saw an article in Small Arms Review, but I cannot locate it.

M118 " Match " First introduced for the 1965 National Matches as XM118.

M118 " match " aka " white box " loaded with stick powder IMR 4895 ? and using LC match Brass with no crimp. Made 1965 to 1982-5 ish supersed by M118 " Special Ball " which was discontinued around 1997 ish.

Is it desireable or collectable? Does it have a premium value?

yes it is desirable to some, collectable too
premium value, yes to someone who shoots it
usually works great in a m1a, at least it does in my m1a,

It shoots .6 MOA in my 700PSS.

Not really rare or collectible really. There is TONS of it still floating around. I have a couple thousand rounds of it myself . Good fodder for M1a's and 7.62 M1's.
White box Match at G-shows runs about $ 13-14 a box , M118 Special Ball around $ 12.

I've got one unopened box of xm 118 dated 1963 and one dated 1964, are you sure about the 1965 intro date?

1963 LC Match, have few hundred reloaded now, if I remember correctly up till early 1980's as I have a bunch of 81 LC Match.

Seen as early as 61 and as late as 82
1965 was stamped LC 65 NM

Don't remember when the M852 (1984?)came in but it has a knurl around the web.

The M118 Special Ball started out in what we called white box ( the white match box with a paper wraper on it marked as M118 Special Ball) then went to the brown box.

The Lake City Plant opened in Independence, MO. 1941 and closed in 1945, reopened in 1951 and is still open today.

The plant is Goverment owned and has been ran  by Remington, Olin Winchester and Alliant, depending on who gets the bid, since 1999 Alliant is running the plant taking over from Olin Winchester.
