i just picked up a 98k and waswondering what is the best thing for cleaning these up? in terms of wood and metal finish. thanks in advane guys.

That odorless mineral spirits (paint thinner) is the ticket.  You want to oil the metal again after you have degreased it.

I'd try to avoid putting water on old wood.
