Gun-Tests had a test of the Browning Automatic Rifle and the HK SLB 2000, both in 30-06. At the end of the article there was a short segment about the BAR (I am using that term to refer to the military light machine gun used in WWII). They seemed to imply that the BAR was similar to the civilian hunting rifle, but full automatic.
I never really thought about it, but I always assumed that the hunting rifle just borrowed the BAR name to capitalize on it's popularity with GIs returing home from WWII (or would they hate the name for having had to lug that thing around
) Does anyone know whether these two firearms share any design similarities, or do they just sort of share the same name?
Oh, the Browning seemed to be a bit more accurate and Gun Tests could not find a scope mount for the HK, although there are supposed to be some available aftermarket eventually and I think HK does, or will, sell one but it will cost $ 400! The HK can take 10 round mags v. the BAR pc mags that hold 4 or 5 rounds with a hinged floor plate so you can't (I assume) put a higher capacity mag in the BAR for defensive use. I'll try to remember to more accurately summarize this part later.
Oh and next month is a report on an AR v. a mini-14
