Quoted: Here's the $40 simmons on my AR-10 and the $500 Aimpoint "Super Combo" Comp M2 from S.W.F.A. on my Bushy:
I swear, at 100 yards, I can't tell the difference and neither can any of my friends. I console myself by remembering the Aimpoint has a 1000hr battery life and will go 80ft under water, although I have yet to test either condition.

You WOULD notice a BIG difference if you were, say, attending a shooting school or otherwise doing realistic multiple-target speed shooting. When your rifle gets banged around and dirty, and you are out of breath trying to hit multiple shots that are only exposed a second (or less!), or you're in a strange lighting situation, any weaknesses in your equipment become readily apparent. Add rain, snow, or other weather factors, and it's a whole different ballgame.
Of course, it IS overkill to spend that much money on a range queen, which is why there are cheaper alternatives available.
