I bought my AR-15 Sporter right after Colt started to offer them again.  This was back in the '90s after they changed their mind about selling to the public.  Now, I would like to find out more about the rifle's history, but everyplace that I've looked want a fee to trace the serial number.  Can anyone help me out?

Go to the article section and look up the legal section.  There should be a link to serial number listings.  There you can find out if your rifle is preban or post.

But if you want an in depth history of your rifle then you need to go through Colt.
