Are carrier bolt assemblies unique to a specific upper receiver? Bushmaster sells upper receivers with and without a carrier bolt assembly. If I were to buy an upper without the assembly, could I still use my existing assembly in it? irregardles of whether the upper is a 20", shorty carbine or M4?

Yes you "should " be able to swap any part of a MIL spec AR to another and it "should run" Bolt or carrier Brl, trigger, anything.

Swapping parts is possible but swapping bolts between uppers is discouraged most of the time. It is physically possible but can cause possible problems. I have swapped them myself, but I don't do it on a regular basis, just for testing purposes.
