I shoot great groups with 295 grain Power Belts pushed by 100 grains of 777.
 I shot a large buck at 40 yards with that combination and it did not pass through  I found a piece of the jacket while gutting but didn't find the rest of the projectile. I wasn't looking really hard but I was paying attention as I expected to at least find damage on the chest wall on the opposing side.I am considering changing to a 400 grain conical or a large hard cast like the TC 370 grain conical. What have you used with good results? What is the heaviest .50 cal round you have shot that groups well? |

I'm loading with a Hornady 385 grain Buffalo Bullet pushed by 115 grains of Pyrodex.
I'll let you know how it works if I can get a deer to walk in front of me. |

I use 68 grains of h4198 and a 250 sst in a MMP hph12 sabot in a savage 10ml2. (It is the only production gun I am aware of that is made for smokeless powder loads). I have shot two deer so far with this load, the closest was about one hundred fifteen yards, the bullet passed through both cleanly.
One of the deer ran about 15 yards, one of them died right there. The 300 grain sst and xtp bullets have both grouped ok, but those are the heaviest bullets that I have worked with. I personally do not worry about the pass through as long as the deer does not go far. |

I'm usualy not concerned about pass through but we haven't had snow for deer hunting in Wisconsin for a couple of years now. This year there was snow opening morning but it had all melted by the time I got to shoot. Fortunately I saw him flip over and pile up after he troted away but if he had turned or gone another 50m I easily could have lost him as there was not a drop of blood to be found untill I got to the sceen.
I used to shoot Buffalo bullets in my old 54 side lock but never shot a deer with it. I think it is between them and 370 gr TC conicals as they are localy available. I wonder if the knurled exterior of the Buffalo Bullet or the lubed rings on the TC is more advantageous in fast twist inlines? |

I use the T/C 555gr Maxi-Ball in my T/C .58 caliber "Big Boar" ..... shuts 'em down in a hurry ...

I use two Triple 7 pellets and 245gr Aero Tip Power Belt w/ Winchester BP #209 primer.
Sorry, only had a chance for Wiley. It definitely passed through his ass at 22 yards.  Dave S Love my blued 26" H&R SideKick. |

thompson omega .45
200gr hornady red tip 150 gr goex clear shot get about 1.5" groups at 100yds if i clean after each shot. |

50 caliber (.490) round ball, 175 grains. 100 grains of FFF. Does the trick.

Hornady 240gr XTP jhp sabot, Federal 209 primer, and 100grs of Pyrodex. Shoots less than 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards out of my T/C Encore 209X50.

585 grain / .730 caliber round ball in front of 70 grains of FFg, all rolled up in the authentic Rev. War era paper cartridge.
Its all shot out of a "Brown Bess" flintlock musket.

I shoot 348gr powerbelt bullets with 100 grs of 777 with the 209 primer out of my .50 cal. black diamond and it does fine. I have killed 2 deer with it and they both ran no more then 45 yards before falling.

a 240 XTP would have passed thru..probably, thats what i shoot in my In Lines.
for large bodied deer..i think i would go with the solid tipped instead of the hollowpoint. believe it or not out of the dozens of whitetails i have taken with BP rifles..the only bullet i have ever recovered was a 385 gr buffalo bullet fired at 25 yards into a 22 pt. it had mushroomed larger than a 50 cent piece had stuck in the opposing ribs. one thing people dont realize is the velocity differences in BP rifles. more weight will not give you the velocity to punch thru.. go lighter.. a RB will zip right thru.. |

I've stuck with the Knight 260 grain ALL LEAD bullet over 90 gr of real blcak for the last dozen years or so (when not shooting RBs,out of other guns) with no failures and only 2 that didn't pass thru,out of maybe 40+ deer,between me and the wife.Used to use Hornady 240 JHPs before that,but had lots of failures-jackets shedding,fragmentation,etc.Maybe they'r making them better now,but I'm sticking with what works for me.(Have been TESTING 200gr SSTs over lots of 777,for a longer range setup)
Used to hurl the 385 gr Great Plains, as well as many others.Above works for me. |
