Sitting here bored at work and thought this might be fun/interesting. Lets rate the rifles with the most shoulder shattering recoil. Maybe once we get some responses we could get a poll.

Since I'm relatively new to collecting I can only speak off of what I currently own or have shot. My M44 off the bench is pretty brutal. I would say that it's pretty close to the 1903A3 I shot off the bench. It's hard to say since I shot the 03 at the end of the day when my shoulder was already throbbing. So I'm going to cast my vote for my M44. What say you?

Silly things like the big AT guns are going to be the worst, though.

Still have to shoot my Martini-Henry 1878 Mark II but suspect it will be pretty brutal from what I hear.

ETA: My Mosin M38 does make nice fireballs and is loud as hell, but doesn't really kick that bad. 1903 is worst I've shot so far...

Ruger #3 in 45-70 is worst I ever shot but my dads model 37 Winchester in 16 gauge is a close second

I had a browning Auto-5 chopped back to 18". Looked good, worked fine. Beat the snot out of me.

My vote would go for the M44 as well......That is why mine now wears a new recoil pad and a cheek pad:

12 gauge three inch slugs. Even with a recoil pad its painful. Honorable mention of Lee Enfield Jungle Cabine.

It was a .303 British Enfield for me. Beat my shoulder up good. I dont have big shoulders to begin with but still. I improvised by rubberbanding a folded dish towel around the stock. It wasnt pretty but it sure helped alot.

M44 and T53's are pretty stout followed by my K31 from a bench.

If you think a regular Enfield kicks, I think you really need to find a No. 5 Jungle Carbine & try that out.

caused by design is the CETME /G3 FAMILY they are the worst- bloody lips & all. the m1a is #2! in my book I like FALs the SCAR17s has no recoil.

My heavy kicker is my rem 700 classic on 375 H&H i HAVE A BUSHNELL HOLOSIGHT TO KEEP THE SCOPE AWAY FROM THE FACE, i WENT WITH THE CLASSIC BECAUSE IT DID NOT HAVE THE MONTE CARLO STOCK REST HITTING MY CHEEK I LOVE THAT GUN.

I find 1903's mauser 98's and other refined pieces very comfortable to shoot but a 91-30 is not a hard kicking rifle.MORE COMMON pieces ARE THE m44 ENFIELD #5 or 45-70 sharps reproductions they are not uncomfortable.

None of these rifles kick especially hard if they're shot the way they were intended. Shooting from a bench seriously magnifies recoil. Shooting from position with proper form is much more comfortable. More fun, too!

Ah yes, forgot about the M95. That is one hell of a round for not that big of a rifle.

Anybody have a Type 99 Arisaka? How is the 7.7mm round?

BOTH THE 7.7 AND 450martini are lower velocity and not flinch inducing.

The M95 carbine is unpleasant, but my infantry-length rifle is actually rather pleasant to shoot. The straight-pull bolt is neat.

Mosins are pretty bad. The k98 I shot was a baby compared to my 91/30.

the worst recoil I have experienced was from an M95 Steyr Carbine in 8*56

it is just plain unpleasant to shoot

Hands down the Remington 11-48 a copy of John Browning's semi auto shotgun. Not a rifle but definitely way more miserable the ones mentioned in the poll.

Mine was a pussycat.

I had a Puma in .454 Casull that kicked harder.

I've heard good things about the .460 Weatherby....

Indeed! The guns were intended to be issued with one of SEVERAL sizes of stocks - depending on the size of the soldier!

Brits are shotgunners traditionally. They still "fit" shotguns to wealthy buyers as a way to "sight them in." The brits also understood that fitting a No. 4 would increase the speed/likelihood of a shot on target in combat - even if the sights were not lined up as well as possible.

The No. 4 is also designed for speed of reloading & is about as fast as they come in bolt guns.

With Privi, mine wasn't bad at all from standing.
However, with military loads, I'd be cery hesitant to crack off a round from the bench

I've never shot any of the poll weapons but a friend of mine's Dad had an old 10 guage.

It had no cap on the buttstock at all and there was a hole in it where they said a lead weight used to go. I bet it didn't weigh 4 pounds.

It was pure EVIL.

I shoot my Mosins (91/30s, M44, T53 and an M39) resting on a bench and I barely feel recoil. I don't sit down though and I put the stock in to the meaty part of my shoulder so its not resting on my collar bone. Maybe I sacrifice some accuracy, but I can shoot hundreds of rounds in an hour time span from my Mosin carbines that way. The only discomfort was from my shirt rubbing my skin while I was working the bolt. I'm putting my K98, maybe it was the ammo but that thing hurt my cheek bone when I fired it.

the stock on the 03 is just too short for a big guy. I can't even get my thumb over top of the wrist of the stock to get a good cheek weld on that knuckle because my nose is up near the magazine cut off lever. I haven't shot mine in over 30 years and it still looks new.

One of these days I'll give it to one of my sons to keep (both of them are big guys with long arms, too, so shooting it won't be fun for them either). My M1917's fit them better, too.

My personal worst (best?) rifle in recoil was my Martini Enfield Artillery/Garrison/Engineers/Whateveryoucallit carbine chambered in .303.

10 rounds and I had a headache, without fail.

Loved it though.

I'm really suprised at the Mosin results. I own a Mosin 91/30, an Enfield No 1, and a 1903a3. While I dont own one, I have a decent amount of trigger time with a friend's K98. I have shot all 4 back to back. The Mosin has much less recoil than the K98 or the 1903. I would say (from lightest to heaviest recoil) they are: Enfield No. 1 < Mosin 91/30 < K98 < 1903A3.

Edit: I just came back and saw how many votes the Mosin has. I have to believe that some of those votes are from people with limited C&R rifle experience and they are just re-posting what they have heard/read. Compared to an AR or an AK (which is probably what most people on ARF shoot) the Mosin has stout recoil. But compared to a 1903 or K98, it does not.

3" Magnum slugs from a Saiga 12 with the original crappy plastic stock is pretty unpleasant. More so than my M44, but that's probably because I usually do the slugs in a group of 10 in rapid succession.

The 91/30 with light ball is a purring kittycat compared to the M44 with heavy ball, so there's a big span there. But the M44 with heavy ball definitely gets my vote. Great fun!

Of the choices, Mosin by virtue om m-44 and m-38. Unlisted, I would go with M95 carbine.

All my life i have been a magnum freek & recoil neverr really bothered me until i fired my Martini-Henry with full power 120gr of 2f. Positively brutal.

The Enfields had four lengths of buttstock.... Long, Regular, Short and Bantam. Mine with the Long stock is next to nothing, even with its iron buttplate.
The Martini Henry in .477 is a real stout mutha! As is my Marlin 1895 with 400 gr bullets at 1800fps.
My Dad's old Husqvarna carbine in 30-06 will get your attention as well (a bit over 6#, sharp comb, a lot of drop to the comb as well)

I also had a 98K (argentine) that was rebarreled to 7.82x51 by the Isralies that I shortened and lightened to about 6#, but it wasn't bad at all.

As I recall, the worst I've ever shot is a Stevens bolt action shotgun (of course I was 12 at the time, but I still remember that thing knocking the snot out of me).

The absolute worst I've experienced was with a Yugo M48A, shooting 40's surplus 198gr Turkish ammo.

It makes my Mosin Nagant carbines look tame by far.

I can't believe there is so many votes for Mosin variants. They are pussycats compared to other rifles I have shot such as featherweight rem 70 in 7mm mag or H&R 3" slug video

the Turkish ammo really makes a difference

that shit is stout, the Romanian is not near as bad as the Turk (same goes for Heavy ball ammo in a mosin carbine, it too is brutal compared to the light ball)

That potentially common combo is why the Mosin Nagant wins. The M44 with heavy ball.

But it's a good way to make your friends who are used to semi-autos feel like pussies.
