i'd get a yugo m48 (milled) or m48A (stamped). they are nice to look at, can be found in great/new conditions, and shoot well..and should be anywhere from $70-150 or so. i've had both and my m48a shot very well. havn't shot the m48 yet because it's such a nice looking gun with a mirror bore.. i shoot corrosive ammo too. the german RC k98's are nice too but can be hit or miss for quality. on the yugo's the #'s will match as well.

Turkish stuff is for parts. Spend $100 and get a Czech VZ.

I would have to agree with Ben, I have M24's, 48's and Czech VZ24's, I like the Vz's the best. One of the best built 98's going, and can be had for 100 bucks. I shoot the cheapy 8mm and it does great.

AIMSurplus had a boatload of Mausers a few months back, but the inventory seems to have dried up. That's where I got my VZ-24.
I haven't checked out Southern Ohio Guns lately, maybe they still have some inventory. In Ohio, Bill Goodman's G&K Show seems to always have some dealers with a few tables of them. EDITED TO ADD: I checked SOG's website www.southernohiogun.com and all they have left are K98's for $199. |

my ~$38.00 Turk Mauser shoots well enough for homeland defense out to a couple hundred yards.
If I wanted =/< 1/4 MOA, I'd just get out the 700PSS.  I wouldn't use mine for a HPM, but it's good enough and cheap for a good time out shootin

Is yer $38 mauser good enough for a beginner to shot a match with???
I mean, will it shoot at least as good as my wore out M16 was in the Corps??? |

it's a gamble.
you might be better served, if shooting in HPM is your main interest. spend more money, buy a K-31 (swiss), 1903a3 springfield, Enfield No4Mk1 / Mk2. and listen to some of the other guys in regards to other mauser's... but I do hear that some of the swiss ones are fairly good. |

Big 5 Sporting Goods (pretty much all over the place) will have sales on VZ's for $59 that were purchased by them from Century Arms. There is also a guy in EE named BigJohnStacey who has 2 for sale. I know these rifles personally as I sold them to him (if they're the same ones).

Get a Yugo M-48. For around $100.00 you can get one in very good-excellant condition. For under $150.00 I think you can get an unissued M-48.
These are the best value and will last a lifetime if maintained. Jim |
