1100 magnum barrels only have one gas port drilled in them vs 2 ports on a standard 2 3/4" barrel. A heavy 2 3/4" shell might generate enough pressure to cycle in a magnum barrel but it probably depends on a lot of variables. There shouldn't be any issues with the action or chamber using 2 3/4" shells. So yes, it's a power factor not a size factor.

My 1100 was made in the mid 60s and shoots 2 3/4 shells only.

Are you sure it is a 3 inch gun? I think they are marked Magnum on the receiver.

Maybe someone put a 3 inch barrel on a 2 3/4 receiver over the years.

The 1100 I inherited from my FIL takes 2 3/4 shells only.  It was built in the early 60's I think.  The smooth full choke barrel with bead is 30 inches long.  I remember him saying he got a shorter mod choke vent rib barrel.  It ALSO measures 30 inches.Trying to decide which barrel to chop down.

1100 Magnum has small gas port for less gas to cycle 3" magnum & 2 3/4" magnum "heavy load" shells well without excessive wear.

They are not ported as open - wide for function with "Light" 2 3/4" Dove or skeet loads.

My dad's 1100 Magnum will cycle high velocity non Magnum shells. If they give you trouble you could always find another barrel and have the gas port opened up a tiny bit, I know a few guys that have some that without any issues.

yes,

Magnum 1100 will only function on 3 inch shells 100% of the time. I have one that I use for home defense and slug use. I also have a extra barrel for duck hunting in storage if necessary.

I had a buddy that got a used 1100 3" gun. He just wanted to shoot trap/skeet with it. I found the gas port sizes online, drilled the gas port to the 2 3/4" barrel size and we were up and running. Real simple.
