What setup do you think would be most affordable and reliable way to defend your house?
Affordable and reliable ? Rem 870 or Mossberg 500/590 pump gun.
What sights do you have on the 870? |
Personally I like the Mossberg Tactical Turkey. I can use it for 'tactical' reasons if the need arises, or more likely for turkey hunting. It's a nice rig.
At this point, id say 870.
Until someone makes a semi with a steel receiver, it will be that way for a LONG time. |
I want a Rem Model 11 for a HD gun. (or at least I would if I actually used a shotgun for HD ) |
I just picked one up myself. |
The one you have.
My choice is a Mossberg 500 with factory GRS 18.5 inch cyl.bore |
Both the Remington 1100 and 11-87 have all steel receivers. |
Yes the gun in your hand that you have ammo and experience shooting it. |
I'm all for reliable but "Be-All End-All" and "Affordable" are rarely seen together. |
No one ever mentions the Benelli Nova. That's damned hard to beat.
Non-NFA? TROMIX S-12 (semi) or WC/ST 870 (pump)
AR-15 |

I had the "Tactical" model and it was great. Were I not an old fart already set in my ways (870s), I might easily have adopted that as my SG platform of choice. |
I just picked up a Mossberg 590 with ghostring sights about a week ago and love it. 8 Rounds in the tube, another 6 on the saddle. Going to pick up a sling, bayonet, and light after I finnish paying on my 1911
Neither of which are very reliable. I should have said "Not until someone makes a RELIABLE, semi with a steel receiver." |
My ideal, aka dream HD scattergun, would be a Ben. M4 SBS with a Surefire. But in the real world where I have to pay for things, my 34yr old 500 with Surefire and side saddle is just fine.

Benelli Supernova Tactical. Among the best pump action defensive shotguns availible.
I must echo "end all be all" and "affordable" rarely go together. My choice: Mossberg 590A1 18.5" barrel, ghost ring sights, and Surefire Weaponlight. It will go bang every time and it will outlive its owner's grandkids if treated half decent. |
Agreed!!! |
What I meant with End All Be All was the shotgun we can all agree is a very good sturdy weapon. I'm looking at getting an 870 I can get all the "tacti-cool" stuff later, but right now I just need a shotgun that will go boom when I need it to. |

I preferred the Mossberg 500 as I like the location of the controls. I don't know how the Remington 870 is but the Mossberg is so easy to detail strip and reassemble. There is quite a few accessories that are made for the Mossberg also.
590A1...because I intend to bayonet the bad guy and then shoot him off the end of the muzzle.
He makes a good point, this one. |
My vote would be a Remington 870 Home Defense model with a SureFire fore-end light. I would load it with 00 buck.
If the sound of you chambering a round doesn't scare them off, the first well-lit and well-aimed shot will take care of the problem. |
Affordable, depends on your definition.
Reliable, in no particular order. Rem 870 Moss 500/590 Benelli Nova Browning BPS Ithaca 37 Win 1300 |
Forgot about the Ithaca 37...if I remember correctly, you can hold the trigger down and pump fire it.....
Yep. The Winchester Model 97 and Model 12 work this way too. All of these guns lack a disconnector. |
The Winchester 1300 Defender has always been my favorite, The only issue I have with Mossbergs is that it is a pain in the butt to put it back together after you clean it
Westchester Model 12 Riot would be my choice if I was looking for a defensive shotgun.
I have my brand new 870 set up with a Hogue pistol grip (for HD only since I dont expect to fire more than once) and forend. I plan on getting the Mossberg replacement 18.5 tactical breaching barrel (also for HD only). I have a Mesa Tactical LEO adapter for later. Need a bandosling!

I own or have owned the most popular HD shotguns over the years.
Remington 870s Mossbergs, Ithaca 37 riot, Benelli, Browning, SKB, Hi Standard, Beretta, Winchester etc. The three guns I would trust my life with would be my 18" Beretta 1201FP 18" Benelli M1 and my 18" Winchester 1897 Riot. |
Thos are some interesting SG shells going on there. |
Saiga 12 FTMFW.
Come on its a 12gauge AK. I dont even like AKs and I know thats full of win. I bought my Saiga 12 months ago and have only out 4rounds trough it to date |
I will admit to never owning either the 11-87 or 1100, but to call either unreliable is a pretty big stretch. Well maintained, they are both VERY good guns that have a much longer pedigree than about anything else currently being manufactured. shooter |
Hells yeah! |
Is that a winchester? |
