My brother in law gave me a Mossberg 500 with a 28in barrel and wood furniture. I was wondering how difficult it is to change out the barrel (want a shorter one) and the buttstock(synthetic). Is it something I could do myself? Any special tools required? Any help would be appreciated.

Barrel is super easy.   Unscrew the knob on the front of the mag tube.  You may have to pull the pump back a bit to let it clear, but that's what holds the whole barrel onto the gun.

As far as furniture, I believe it's a couple of pins.  But I do know about the barrel.

Buttstock change requires only a long screwdriver, commonly available.

Barrel is just as easy to change as Camino said. Or you could simply cut the 28" barrel off to whatever length you want, as long as it's OVER 18".
