Without a doubt, go for the 870 Police. It's just a more durable gun.

Plus, I've heard that Mossbergs occasionally break their ejectors, and the fact that someone messed with the ejector on the gun you're interested in sets off a bunch of alarms in my mind.

I'll second that.  
Dinked up screws always sets off alarms, since anyone who'll damage a screw usually doesn't stop there.
Who knows what ELSE you won't see until it's YOURS.

Second, Mossberg made a good try with the 590A1, but the Remington 870 Police is STILL the Cadillac of HD guns.

When in doubt buy new.  Given a choice between an 870 Police and any other pump, buy the 870.
