shotguns are cool
 bigger holes than a .45acp and a 5.56, cant beat that unless your dog is on the BG, the shotgun (if in range) will put your shots where you shoot need? well since you dont have one, you NEED one! |

You are perfectly well armed with an AR and a decent handgun.
Need vs. want is an interesting paradox. My advice is this; if you can afford it and you want it, then buy it and enjoy. The 870 is a rugged, simple, versatile weapon and I would recommend one to just about anyone. I have an AR, and an 870, and several handguns. I may not "need" them all, but I LIKE them all. |

Need is overrated.
Want on the other hand is the way to go. Buy it shoot it enjoy it. An old Chinese proverb goes something like this. Better to have an injured dog than a dead wife. |

sydney7629 - You are certainly well-armed with what you have. However, I have a shotgun and it is a BLAST to shoot. It is also my Number 1 home defense weapon. ad of worrying about when the world goes to shit, or how well your home is being defended by your AR or why a shotgun is useless becuase the ar is the most superior rifle in teh world and will be for ever, why dont you just buy one for fun and not worry about? buy a police magnum and go skeet shooting, go duck hunting, do something other then worry about everything else and just have fun. thats why I own 5 shotguns and no ARs. I have plenty of other guns i can defend myself with, but I'd rather be at the skeet or trap range or out hunting rather then curled up in a corner of my house waiting for an intruder to come in.

Most of us have way more guns than we need. What we want is another story. I believe we have a moral obligation to support American Arms Manufactures who produce the guns we so much need and enjoy.
That being said shotguns are lot's of fun. Shooting clay bird games like skeet, trap, and sporting clays are fun and build skills. Hunting with the shotgun and shooting birds on the wing to me is more exciting than shooting a deer standing still. IMHO, MIKE. |

Go to a local 3-gun competion in your area. Your covered on the handgun and rifle stages, you don't want to have to borrow someone elses shotgun do you?

Because shooting at moving clay birds is extremely fun. Its better than golf. I had forgotten this in the black rifle mania I suffered after college. last year I decided to play along in the trapshoot at our club. I hefted the 870 with 30" full choked barrel and it came up so perfectly naturally that I broke the first bird as though all I had to do was reach out and slap it. I was re hooked. I had not picked up that gun in 15 years. Now, I'm actually considering dumping one of my FALs to get a decent O/U for trap and skeet. Oh, and a load of bird or buckshot will bracket an inside door frame perfectly and certainly discourage any home intruder. I'm now up to having my 870, the mossberg 20ga I got for the kids and I inherited an 870 folder from my dad. Man these things are fun.

Because you have to have at least one of everything...
Plus, if you're not sure about using it for home defense, you can always shoot trap with it. Or use it to put some bird on the dinner table. |
