I aquired one on the cheap, very rusted but has good wood. Playing with it I realized that the barrel recoils into the receiver, sort  of  a 12 guage mateba. It looks like it would make a good shooter once it is cleaned up. There is some rust over the chamber, more a foot from the muzzle and lots on the receiver; at what point is that a concern? The barrel is about a 28" full choke.

It seems that the action uses a recoil spring over the mag tube. Over the forward end of the spring is what seems to be a spring guide, except that between the guide and the barrel lug is a split tube. The ends of the lug and guide are chamfered to compress the split tube around the mag tube acting to brake the recoil of the barrel in proportion to the power of the round. How much does it matter what kind of lubricant I use? It seems to have traces of grease in that area.

Any other comments about this design? The barrel lug has a matching serial number stamped on it but the last few digits are overstamped.

It is a recoil operated shotgun. It kicks more than gas operated but are not prone to stoppages with light loads. and shoot cleaner than gas guns. If you cut down the barrel or change the gun in any way it might not cycle. MIKE.

Thanks for the info. It seems to be an exception to the info above, it is a Model 48 sportsman with the serial in the 303xxxx range.

Can I get a 15 round mag extention

I'm tempted to order some aguila minishells. It has a solid carrier so I think it might feed them.
