I love my M&P 22 Compact, but I think I’d like to ditch that and build a Ruger MK IV Volquartsen/Tactical Solutions Pac-Lite

Thoughts from people who’ve actually done it?

Only requirements:
Threaded barrel
Rail for red dot optic

Pictures are a plus!

Just get a Scorpion or Black Mamba and it is already fully upgraded for you.
" />

My 22/45 has a mix of Volquartsen and Tandemkross parts. I’ve been happy with both companies, and they both have excellent customer service.  The 22/45 is just a suppressor host for me though so I just have  a few upgrades to make it more reliable (Reduced power springs, LCI delete, mag disconnect delete). If I were looking to build a gun though, not sure I’d fiddle getting a new upper, barrel, accurizing kit, trigger, LCI delete, etc. It is just as cost effective to buy a Volquartsen gun. If you keep an eye out you can find them relatively cheaply. I saw a brand new one sell for $900 on GB a few months back. A 22/45 plus pac lite will run you probably 750-800, and that’s before any other upgrades.

Just my $0.02.

If you go volquartsen, and you are set on a red dot.  Get the one that’s premilled with NO iron sights.  Looks real slick.

The flag pistol that I have above is a 6" Scorpion.  As background Volquartsen makes an upgrade for literally every part of the Ruger MK III and MK IV pistols.  They had the bright idea of putting ALL their upgrade parts together into a pistol.  A fully upgraded pistol from them based on the MK III is a Scorpion and a fully upgraded MK IV is a Black Mamba.

Mine also has a few additional upgrades that they don't include with my particular model, namely the slingshot kit and the fiber optic front sight.

I really like my Scorpion.  I actually work with a guy that went to school with Scott Volquartsen so that was neat to find out, and I was happy to support an Iowan business. Having the Scorpion over the Black Mamba is a non-issue for me.  Once you learn the trick to assembling/disassembling the MK III, you can field strip/reassemble in 30 seconds, making he MK IV an unnecessary "upgrade."

It actually does have a threaded barrel...if you see the circular ring towards the front, that's a threaded piece to attach the comp.  You can take the comp off and attach a suppressor should you choose.  I have a pic around here somewhere of just that, let me see if I can dig it up and get it uploaded.

ETA: Found it:

Quality costs.  It's worth every penny, if you can afford one, IMHO.  I've never felt any firearm that nice.  I went to the gun store to check out the 22/45, walked out with one of these instead.  It felt 3x nicer, so warranted 3x the cost. Plus as you can see I ended up with a 22/45 as well in the end anyways.

It's also why I darn near bought another one when I saw it sell brand new for $900 on GB.  The only downside it was all red (bleck) and based off the standard MK III vs. the 22/45.  I prefer the grip angle of the latter.

I have a Volquartsen from way back.  It’s ok.  It’s a 22LR pistol based on the Ruger platform.  It’s a nice one, but $1500 opens it up to great competition (based on your purpose).

Look into the Madmacs precision tactical mount if you mount an optic. I just ordered one, they're on sale for $80 shipped.

https://www.maddmacsprecisiontactical.com/trijicon-rmrreg.html

They replace the back dovetail sight and make the gun look much cleaner. You can't use the rear sight anyways with an optic mounted so may as well replace it.

Here is a pic of one installed.

I have M&P COMPACT and a MKIV Stainless Target Threaded. I don't even bother with the M&P.

I love the MKIV so much. Extremely accurate. I have a  Burris FF3 on it.

Doing the full VOLQUARSTEN mkiv competition package install, $180, will turn a y MKIV into a dream.

Pick your MKIV that you like. Install the kit.  Be happy.

Buy the scorpion. It's fully upgraded out of the box and it will be your favorite gun to shoot.

@bcv which model is that scorpion exactly?

Don’t think it’s any current one, as it looks like a 4.5” Limited in black. All Scorpions are essentially the same with a few choices.

4.5” vs 6” barrel
1911 grip vs target 22 grip (aka 22/45 vs standard)
Comped vs non-comped
Fiber optic vs black post

Then you choose finish.

You can also just have Scott make one custom for you. There is a build configuration option on their site, similar to building a vehicle online.

This one minus the muzzle comp that helps tame the super powerful .22LR cartridge.

Sorry, it's $170.

You get everything to change out the internals that matter for accuracy and reliability.  Adjustable trigger, lighter hammer and springs, better disconnector, heavier firing pin, better extractor.  The total upgrade.

To install all the trigger parts, its simple with this video, you just need some punches:

Hah there actually is a noticeable difference with and without the comp. Not saying you need one but there is literally zero rise with it on. Plus it looks cool and that makes it faster too.

Here's my take for what it is worth. I have all 3 you mentioned. Volquartsen Scorpion, Pac-lite, and a markiV. My Volquartsen has been utterly flawless and at this point goes every single time I go to the range. My daughters have taken a liking to it and I have a hard time shooting it because it is their favorite, mine too. I have a Pac-lite on a 22/45 frame. It came with a package deal I picked up. I like it and it shoots fine, but really not that impressed overall except for the weight. To be fair I have not spent alot of time wringing it out for potential either. I have a MarklV tactical I picked up because "why not". It has been an utter disappointment. The worst Ruger I own in the accuracy department. Every Mark I own will out shoot this one if I closed my eyes. Very disappointed I will say again. If it were me, go Volquartsen. I have never been anything but impressed.

Had a 22/45 Mk3 with paclite upper, excellent pistol and very accurate with right ammo.  But the 10rd mags suck, sometimes you need more than 10.  I bought a TX22 and its been excellent.

Im still looking for a rifle pistol with brace, POF Rebel looks really good.

I have the 22/45 "Tactical" model because I already had a "Lite" model and wanted the all steel upper this time. I really didn't want all the rails but that was the only all steel threaded model.

If I were to do it over, I would have gotten the standard 5.5" model and used the money saved to sent it out to have it cut/threaded to 4". Regardless of model, I would use a MadMikes mount for the optic instead of the rail. All this together gets you a much cleaner look, no front sight or rails (or holes left from removing those parts) and no billboard model markings (Tactical, Target, Lite, etc.) and a slighter shorter package for not that much $
