I'll keep it short, what full size 1911 would you recommend on a budget of $800 or less? The purpose of this pistol would be primarily range shooting but something that I can also have in the car when going on trips etc. This is not going to be used for CCW.
With many prices on base-lower end models easily reaching upwards of $1k I am feeling somewhat tempted to just pick up a NIB Glock 21 but I love the feel of a 1911. Just don't hold the Glock temptation against me!  ETA: If you could get it down to circa $700 or even $650 that would be great as well but I want a good quality, reliable weapon. While I love to get to know my guns, I'd prefer to have something that works great right out of the box and to save the tuning and perfecting for when I become more knowledgeable and experienced with these. |

Here I was about to start my own "What 1911 should I buy" thread, when lo and behold... Instead I'll just hijack... erm, add my question to this one.
So... Yeah. Same question, but with a bigger budget. Say capping out at $1500 or so. Been looking at the Kimber Warrior and the Springfield MC Operator. Would love a Wilson or the like, but they're a bit pricey. In that price range, am I better suited buying up to my limit, or going with a less expensive base model and then turning it around to get customized? |

Sorry.  Realistically, my budget is pretty similar to yours. Less, actually, since I'm a college student, and don't really *have* any disposable income. I'm an impulse buyer, especially when it comes to firearms. When I went in to pick up my USP (Horror! Plastic gun mentioned in the 1911 forum!) a year ago, I walked out with an AR, a bunch of gear, and a preorder for a PS90. I stopped into the Gun Gallery to say Hi as I was moving down to Orlando, I ended up with a Remington 700 in my truck somehow.  Knowing all this, I figure that if I go shopping for a $500-800 1911, I'll end up with $2000+ custom. So I figure just split the difference. Now, if Capitol One would stop extending my credit line, I wouldn't have this problem... |

For $800 or less, I'd buy the Springfield Loaded or shop for a clean used Series I Kimber.
For $1500, I'd keep shopping and hold out for a used Wilson CQB or Les Baer Thunder Ranch. |

One other brave soul suggested Taurus PT 1911. You can find them new for a fair bit below your budget number, and use the extra cash to shoot more. It occaisionally gets a bad rap, but mine has been flawless for a year and a half (and about 7.5 k rounds), and just gets better as time goes on. My local gunsmith liked mine so much (I had the slide done in nickel teflon) he began stocking them in his very small display case. BTW, I have a 229 SAS also, and it's always a tossup between those two as my favorite pistol for just range shooting.

for $800 get TWO sa milspecs and keep one stock just as it was designed. later on with more cash send the second one out to a smith to get tricked out if thats your thing. one for home one for road

Kimber Custom Series 1. I got mine for $625. Added Ahrends tactical grips, and 3 Novak mags, still under $740. Accurate and reliable so far.

For that price, the Colt.
For a little more, STI Trojan. For occasional ccw, the SW1911PD is nice and within your budget. |
