Well I went through 8 pages and couldn't find a carry ammo thread!

So...what do you carry?  I find myself carrying either hardball or gold dots....

There is a page somewhere in the ammo threads about good self-defense ammo. I'm no expert but from what I've read of the experts the Speer Gold Dot loads are a good choice for carry ammo. That's what I have in my .40 S&W. Also, I think the Winchester Ranger ammo is a good choice for carry ammo.

Remington 230gr Golden Sabers in the 45. Hornady TAP 124gr in the Glock 19.

Uhoh, I just said the G-word in the 1911 forum!

The TAP ammo sounds like the bees knees from what I've read, but I can't find it in .45 ACP anywhere. Golden Sabers will do.

I've been using Winchester 230gr HP that Walmart sells for the past 3 years in my 45's.  Am I the only one?  It has a big hollow point, feeds great in all my pistols and is rather inepensive at $15 a box of 50.  Any thoughts?

That was a nice link......looks like more proof that the 230g Gold Dot and Golden Sabre and good choices.

ETA:  Even though the GS didn't expand well through 6 layers of denim you still got good penetration and a .541" hole.....I would like to have seen the GD with the same denim test....

200 gr. +P Speer Gold dots.  Accurate and despite an ashtray sized hollowpoint cavity they feed every time from both of my 1911s (Wilson CQB, Kimber stainless TLEII).

I wonder if we could go back and post our 25 yard from sandbag rest in a 5" Government model groups.

The reason this came up is I went to the range to see what my groups looked like from sand bags.  Here's what I found.

S&B 230 gr. ball fun ammo shot under 4" groups.
Federal Hydrashock 230 gr shot 8" groups
Winchester 185 gr. silver tip hollow point made 9" groups.

I was rather disappointed with the carry ammo groups.  Here is the list of all the ammo every mentioned on this thread.  What are you guys getting out of these.

Winchester Ranger RA45T
Speer Gold Dot
Remington 230 gr Golden Sabers
Black Hills 230 FMJ Match
Hornady TAP
Winchester 230gr HP
Eldorado(PMC) Starfire, 230 gr.

While better than ball, there are several "premium brands" that are much better performers.

To all you guys that carry Hydrashoks:

Are you worried about reliable expansion through clothing?  Have you performed any of your own tests to see how the round performs through t-shirts, jeans, etc.?

I was just asking b/c I used to carry Hydrashoks until I did some testing......

230 GR. HydraShok in all the .45s...as far as reliable expansion, let's just continue to engage the target until the threat goes away.
