I have a Colt 1991 purchased new and heavilly modified for nightstand use, but I'm going to be looking for a used stock 1911 for a beater, possibly a Springfield, Sistema, or Norinco.

Please tell me how to evaluate a used 1911 so I don't get screwed!

Here's my .02....

1. General appearance. Does the pistol have the look of one that's been abused? Clean bore? Any pitting?
2. Full function check. Do all safeties work as designed? Will mags drop freely? Slide lock to rear on empty mag?
3. Fit/ Finish. Slide to frame and Barrel to slide.

This is not to say that great deals can't be had on beat up guns. That's the beauty of John Mosses invention…easy to rebuild.

Four suggestions........try to shoot it....post on the board the make and condition and get feedback from the members......get a commitment on guaranty.....take it apart..or have them take it apart and inspect wear areas.....slide/frame....slide/lugs....disconnector.....trigger creep.....thumb safety tension...bushing slide fit....frame condition at rebound area.....etc- etc....if they won`t let you examine....tell them you`ll keep looking.......
