The cylinder is plenty strong enough for any factory load.
Where things go South fast, is when you start using "blow down the barn door" hand loads that are hotter than factory. Using hand loads, you can blow ANY gun up, no matter how strong. |

The cylinder notches are cut between the chamber holes in the cylinder & thus no concerns about weakening the steel.

I think the 686+, uses the larger cylinder from the N-frame, that is how S&W found room for the 7th round.
