I plan on buying myself a new revolver soon and I am not sure of which caliber I want.

.45 long colt or 44 magnum.

If any one can give me some ballistics information or reasons to get one or the other I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

What do plan on using it for? CAS, plinking or hunting?

Both are great calibers, so you want an advantage, J-T-S? I would give it to the .44 Magnum mainly because it is hotter than a .45 LC and you can shoot .44 specials with much less recoil and blast in the magnum firearm. If you reload, then there isn't as much reason to choose one over the other. If the little woman, kids or friends shoot with you, the .44 special would be more pleasant for them to deal with.

Boy is that ever a wide open question.

My favorite round in a revolver is the 45acp. I find that the 45acp in the 5-6" barrel length is a nearly perfect combination for most situations. It is a very manageable recoil and the old big and slow is very accurate.

But the 45LC and the 44Mag are also nice. Waht do you want to use the revolver for? Will it be mostly target shooting? Steel targets? Hunting?

I will most likely use it for plinking and bragging rights. To my knowledge the ruger comes with two cylinders .45LC/.45ACP or .44MAG/.44special is that true?

Rugers single action revolver (cowboy style) was still offered with two cylinders in .45 LC and .45 ACP, like the .22 LR and .22 Magnum. The .44 Magnum needs no extra cylinder as the special cartridge is just shorter and drops right in the charge holes the same way.
