I have a Glocks, in many thousands of rounds with many types of ammo I have never once had one fail to fire or go into battery for the next round

5 or so out of a full mag. That is enough to check cycling and feeding.

Correct. 25-50rds w/o hiccup, into action it goes. Of course I usually shoot 200+ rounds of fmj first too

I've never had a 9mm that didn't like HST 147.

Maybe 5 out of each mag. Say they're 15 rounders, load 10 range and then 5 JHP on top. Just make sure it feeds right when full. Do that for two mags, then the other two are downloaded to just 5 JHP to make sure they feed right on the way to empty. Total 15-20 rounds.

The range ammo is more, gotta be 250-300 without failure. Obviously that's first; no point in blowing through expensive ammo if it doesn't pass the range stuff.

LOL, no they don't, especially low powered stuff if you own a Gen4.

I usually shoot one or two thousand rounds of FMJ and then a 50 round box of the hollowpoints that I am going to carry which has been 124+P Gold Dots for the last 5 years.

Limiting myself to two different guns during that time has made it pretty easy to do.

50, if it fires a full box without so much as even the slightest sign of a hickup. then I'm fine with it. The carry ammo I use, i have shot more than that though, duno how much but north of that and never had any failure. Most of my shooting consists of FMJ though. (Carry Federal HST or Speer Gold Dot)

atleast 250 of regular fmj range ammo then a box or two of cheap hp's then enough intended carry ammo to run through each mag a couple times.

That may be your experience, but not mine.

All my personal Glock's are older Gen3 guns and they do in fact eat absolutely everything. I feed them a steady diet of cheap steel cased ammunition, and they work great with Gold Dot, Ranger, HST, Critical Duty, etc... Pretty much everything I have crammed in the magazines.

My department issued 17.4 also eats everything like a fat kid at a buffet...

If you've been around guns long enough and choose a good brand 50 will probably do.

Bare minimum for defensive ammo is 50 RDS shot as fast as I can get good hits.

This exactly. VP9, M&P9, Shield9 never an issue. Usually ends up being about a box of 50 or so for each the first time.

200 rounds of the plinking stuff and then I HAMMER five mags of Speer Gold Dots through it. No FTF and I`m good. I`ve used this method in over thirty pistols and have had no issues carrying any of them.

I usually just load up my gun the way I'd carry it. So fully loaded mag with one in the pipe. Shoot it and see how it functions. Any hangups and it's no good. But yeah most the time I don't waste a whole box of expensive hollow points. Usually it's pretty obvious if the gun doesn't like the ammo. Lots of failures to feed or extract.

I own all Glocks. They seem to work pretty well as most have seen. My regimen: is i shoot a lot of stuff out of them. All kinds of ball ammo, and hollow points too. Steel cased, cheap brass, good brass. I'll do full mags, half mags, couple of bullets, several different amounts. When a guns shown to be trustworthy I load it up and good to go. This usually takes a thousand rounds or so. I try and prevent Murphy as best possible.

For my G19 I ran two full G17 mags through it in a row. The first mag was zeroing to see exactly where the round impacted in relation to my aim and the second as fast as I can press the trigger.

Depends on the gun.
Some guns I wouldn't lose a bit of sleep if I was forced to load it up and carry it without a single live shot fired beforehand (H&K P2000 9mm).
Others I wouldn't feel comfortable until a few thousand FMJ and a few hundred JHP have been downrange (any 1911).
Most guns are somewhere in between. 200 FMJ, 2 mags of JHP and I'm good to go until I can get to the range more.

I find it funny if anyone who is a "Real Shooter" not a keyboard commando fires less than a box of 50 at a min. to ensure proper functioning and acceptable accuracy.
"Real Shooters" do not by SD ammo in boxes of 20/25 they skip to the head of class and buy LE ammo in boxes of 50.
They buy enough to load out their carry guns.

Usually start out by shooting 500rnds of ball and follow up with a box of 50 Federal 124gr+p HST. That is my preferred carry round.

Somewhere around 30-50 rounds generally unless the gun has ever given me a reason to doubt it. Once any previous issues have been corrected, I'll run a few more (100-200) through it just to be sure.

A couple hundred rounds of dirty assorted ball followed by 50-100 rounds of the chosen JHP (I use 124gr Gold-Dots in 9mm, purchased by the case) in one range session. Did this with my P320 and the wife's G19 when we bought them earlier this year.

I knew my P3AT functioned well, so when I changed carry ammo for that one I just fed it 50 rounds of the new load.

the old school method mentioned in magazines and such was 200 rounds of carry ammo, but that was 10 plus years ago before everyone got poor...

depends on the gun and reputation... I would say minimum at least two magazines worth. A five round sample is nothing. Especially given how much the magazine performance and spring force varies from full magazine to empty. If you wanted to economize, in a 15 round magazine, perhaps load the first 4 and last 4 with your JHP and use FMJ for the rest as that is where you will most likely encounter issues.

Will put about 500 rounds through a new pistol, with 5 to 7 dedicated mags just for that gun. Normally 200 FMJ up front for break in, tear down and clean, check for wear, any issues. Rest of the 500 is carry HPs, spread out over a few range sessions, being sure to verify each mag.

If all goes well, then can think about carrying.

There it is - and the next question would be 'how many rounds will your gun work without cleaning'. Don't know. Don't carry but two mags and if it will empty both mags of carry ammo after six months, its good. What do you expect, to be involved in an extended firefight and find a case of .45 just laying around? That doesn't work, because you would become a casualty trying to load a mag even if such a miraculous event happened.
For those in competitive or action shooting, I can see how you would need to have a certain number of rounds that the gun will function without repeated failures to load but for personal defense it only has to shoot as many rounds as you normally carry.

Thankfully, HST and Gold Dot are at the lowest they've ever been right now.

You can get a box of 50 9mm HST for under 25 bucks. There's not reason to not shoot enough to properly test it in your pistol.

I hammer them with a few hundred plated or coated reloads while I'm learning it and sighting it in.
Then a few mags of carry ammo, at least 2-3, more if it is a low capacity gun.
Completed detail strip and clean prior to first range use then again prior to carry. Inspect for any usual wear and re-lube.

If a lot of other people have confirmed theirs works with it, I just shoot 100 and call it good. Haven't had any issues with 147 HST yet.

I always just took a new CCW to a IDPA or USPSA match and used it instead of my competition gun. Not always the most competitive gun depending on what division it fell into but figured that is the best test of new gun. Test the ammo, the magazine, holster, shooting and reloading under pressure of the clock and in awkward positions etc. If it can get through two or three matches without a malfunction I figure it is good to go for carry.
