Local guy has a gen 3 Glock model 20sf for $500.  Comes with the box and 2 mags.

I've always kind of wanted a hand cannon, but am I nutty for wanting to expand my caliber cache with this relative ammo shortage going on?

Is it just me or does your pistol have a chubby?

If you want someone to dissuade you, then I am not your man.

Nothing beats a compact 10mm that weights about the same as a glock but shooters much softer and is more accurate, and can switch between 40 and 10mm without any mods besides a simple barrel change.

They don't. The .40 is just easily convertible to 10mm because it's a large frame.

They did not. When they made them in .40, they simple used the same frame as the .45 and only changed the slide and barrel while putting a spacer in the mags. This means it has a .45 acp magwell that gives you the extra space for the long 10mm cases, and all you have to do is have the barrel throated and take out the spacer in the mags and wala a 10mm. It might have been a cost saving measure to use the .45 frame but it inadvertedly made it the easiest 10mm conversion out there, and with the over engineered nature of the Mauser M2 means that it is tough enough to handle even the hottest 10mm loads, while its thick rotating barrel means it soaks up the recoil (feels like a regular .40), and is dead nuts accurate. Plus you can get plenty of cheap trigger time on the gun by having a spare .40 barrel you can drop in and practice with.

I would say it is roughly the size of a Glock 26. 10 round mags.

If you buy the .40 S&W model all you have to do is ream out the barrel, nothing else has to be done. The gun is already stronger then just about any other 10mm platform on the market (think ruger P-series on steroids).
Mauser could not have set out to build a better 10mm even if they wanted to. A 10mm that you are willing to carry and carries well sure beats a 10lb brink that gets left at home.

There is: EAA Witness. I strongly recommend avoiding the Wonderfinish  models as those seem to have problems with the slide cracking. The match, elite, etc have better triggers anyway. I have the standard model polymer and have shot some seriously hot loads through mine and have no signs of a crack yet. It's also recommended to replace the recoil spring with a Wolff 22 lb.

You probably shouldn't get into 10mm unless you've got money to piss away on ammo or you reload. If you reload, it really isn't any more expensive than any other pistol and defensive ammo is about the same cost too. The greatest strength of 10mm in my opinion, is the versatility it offers. You can load 165 gr Gold Dots at 1,400 fps for a really flat shooting and effective personal defense/urban carry load and with just a change of magazine have 220 gr hard cast at 1,200 fps for large animal defense. Available bullets range from 135 gr to 230 gr.

Comparing the 40/10mm to the 38/357 Mag is a poor choice.  If the 10mm operated at almost twice the pressure as the .40 then it would be an accurate comparison, but it doesn't.
I would agree that unless one reloads they should stay away from the 10mm, but with ammo these days (or the lack thereof), that can be said of any cartridge just about. I'd disagree that it's as cheap to reload for than the 9/40/45.  I don't know about you, but I can pick up free 9/40/45 brass any day of the week.  10mm? Not so much, I've reloaded for years and probably haven't picked up 100 pcs of 10mm brass total compared to literally hundreds of pounds of 9/.40/.45.
Can't really argue that the 10mm is versatile, it is, but the .40 can shoot every bullet the 10mm can.  And yes I loaded for the 10mm for years (to Underwood levels and beyond) but I found the .40 to be so close to the 10mm when loaded warm that it's not worth the extra cost to load for, the .40 brass is free and stronger too.  The 10mm is a good cartridge though, even if it is a wee bit over-hyped by some (you know, the uneducated 10mm is a .41 Magnum kind of guys).
BTW Underwood makes good ammo, but they use over book max charges of 800x for the 10mm, I've weighed them.  I'm not saying that's completely wrong, but I am saying that it's over pressure. Too often people defending the 10mm tell others to buy "real" or "warm" 10mm ammo, which more often than not is also over pressure.

I think the 10mm is a really cool round. However, I enjoy the 40 caliber much better. Ammo is cheaper and much more available than 10mm and has less recoil. The 40 has enough power for what I do which is ccw. If and when I feel the need for more power I use the good old .45acp in 1911 flavor. OP, if you have the cash to spend, want to get into reloading too, then by all means get the 10mm and have fun. I'm not going to talk you out of a 10mm.

Because the longer case obviously can accept a longer bullet and still leave room for powder. 180 grain deep cavity hollow points or 200 grain FMJ is about the most you can safely fit in a .40, whereas 10mm has no problems with 200 grain hollow points and cast bullets up to 230 grains.
