if you don't have to actually put the barrel into the upper receiver you only need a $5 home depot punch kit and a small hammer. There isnt much to them.

Yep, the advice on using tape covered vise grips made a huge difference in my frustration level. I only use the punches towards the end and it really cuts down on marking up the lower.

You are foolish not to own an armorers tool even if you don't build from parts, they are useful for many things. Get a solid one, not a flimsy one. I have this one and it's chunky: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001M5TRI8/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I had to sand off the paint on the side where the 3 pins are to get it to grab the barrel nut, other than that it's fine.
