I was recently given a revolver in rough shape. Trying to decide if it's worth fixing for
a truck / tackle box gun.

It looks to be a 2" barrel fixed sights
Double action,hand ejector,swing out
No caliber marks, but a .357 lacks about a 1/4" from
bottoming in the cylinder(I am assuming a .38 caliber variant)
Inside the cylinder opening it is stamped   " W
                                                                   17521"
The ser.#  V6993X (the x at the end also behind a number)
It has the smith logo  and "MADE IN U.S.A" on one side
It has 4 screws on one side of the frame,same side as logo above

Any help much appreciated.

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, Second Edition, revolvers with serial numbers from V1 to V81119 would be .38/200 and/or .38 Special Victory Models, with manufacturing dates between 1942 - 1945.

Sooo, if a 38 special fits , it is okay.As far as it not being
another caliber.

What is the difference between 38 special and 38/200?

Is it worth anything in rough..i.e. ruined finish with pits...condition?

.38/200 is an old British revolver round, over here it's known as .38 S&W.
The case and bullet are a couple thousandths larger than the .38 Special family, and somewhat shorter. .38 S&W shouldn't enter a .38 Spl. chamber due to the diameter, and .38 Spl. is too long to chamber in an unaltered .38 S&W chamber, though many Victory models were so altered by running a .38 Spl. reamer into the .38 S&W chambers

ETA: It's certainly worth cleaning up and using as a truck gun or tackle box gun. It'll have the old long action, IMO a plus for double action shooting.

I just tried a 38 special, it fit snugly into the dirty cylinder,
seats to within about a 1/4" from the end of the cylinder.
