The issue flap holster is designated M-12.

There is the Bianchi (the original maker) and there are contracter made models.

I have a contractor made knock off that cost me about $25 NIW.  Expect to pay considerably more for the Bianchi.

buy him something nicer than the issue holster. Around here they are wearing everything from Uncle Mikes nylon to Galco Jackass leather to Haji special.
Get something nice.

The M12 holster works great for what ist is designed to do, retain the pistol.  Having said that, when it comes time to draw the pistol...problems arise.  The metal loop that keeps the flap closed has a tendency to get hung up on the stron hand during the draw stroke.

If you look at the nightly news, nobody (I mean NOBODY) is carrying the issue holster.  Seems that all I see on the tube are drop leg tac. holsters.  Quite a change from when I was there years ago...times change I guess.

Anyway, just my 2cents

I agree with those who say no on the issued holster.  They are fine for going to the range, but if your son deploys and gets to carry an M9 in theater, it sure would be nice to have something better...

The Blackhawk CQC is a really nice holster as well. I have one for my Glock 19 and also one for  my Beretta 92's. Not super cheap, but great quality.

I stuck with a M12 holster but with some of the nice add ons. The thumb break and shoulder rig from Bianchi, and a drop leg adapter from Specter Gear really update the issue holster, I can wear it low with BDU, clipped to web gear, or the shoulder rig for with flight suit, very versatile.

If you want one for military history purposes they are neat.  If you want one for use....its a PIECE OF CRAP...I've used one (in the military), and they were absolute shit.
