I just used a $25 woodburning kit from hobby lobby and started making holes. I also used my dremel with a sanding drum to knock down the finger grooves as well as making the trigger guard finger groove

The trigger guard notch and the side frame stippling are both little things I took in from Travis Haley. After he stippled his gun and cut a finger groove I was holding it, and I just really liked the way it fit in my hands. Like you said though, to each his own.
