9mm or 45....
I'd opt for the 17, but you'll end up with all three. |

A real man needs a G-17 and a 1911.
 Of course, this is just for starting off. I have 4 Glocks and working on another..

The 17 will be less costly to shoot as 9mm is very inexpensive. This means more trigger time and less bank breaking. Itll also be easier for those who are recoil sensitive to handle. It fits my hands and those of my family just fine. (This would be my pick.) Ive used a 21 at the range and think the grip is pretty fat...and I have big hands. Also 45 isnt my pick of caliber either and is expensive to shoot. This would be last on my list esp if smaller hands were in the mix. I like the 22 but again ammo cost for plenty of practice is going to run into some $$$. Recoil can be pretty stought for those no used to it. This would be my 2nd choice as I like 40 (just not the ammo cost). I also like 357 but thats also expensive to shoot. |

Make sure the 21 fits you well before deciding. If it does then just flip a 3 sided coin to decide.

See if you like the feel of the 21 and whether you can conceal it. I have one and it is a great gun, but a little bulky if I don't have a jacket to hide it under.
I don't have a 22, but out of the choices you listed if I was buying a first service pistol sized Glock I think I'd go with that one out of those choices. Same size as a 17 and has the more effective 40s&w round. Personally I really like my 19 and would be tempted by a 23 if I was sort of starting over. |

17 - the 9mm is less expensive, the recoil is less than the other two, and with good ammo, it is just as effective as the others in the unlikely event that you have to use it on human flesh.

If your going to carry it I'd suggest looking at the mid sized models (19, 23) as well.

Get the 22. The 9mm has proven time and time again to NOT stop a Human. 40 S & W has a much better track record. Wal- Mart has 100rd 40 S&W for $15.95 |

The G17 would be a great choice for a first Glock for all the uses you described. If you dont have a large hand and find the grip on the G19 to be comfortable, it would probably be a better choice and slightly more carry friendly yet still do everything the G17 does at the range.

Yeah if you shoot them in the foot!  If I am going to shoot someone, I'm going to shoot to kill only!!!! God I hope I never have to make that choice but belive me it will be nothing but Head shots. |

I got the 22 just cuz I like the idea of the .40 over 9mm. Now whether the a .40 truly has more stopping power than a 9 i don't know. But if a .40 helps me sleep better at night then that's what I am gonna get. If you feel comfortable with a 9mm get one. I personally don't ever want to get shot with either.

Go with the GLOCK 17 9mm. If you want a .40S&W gun, get either the SiG P226 .40 or P229 .40. Don't get the GLOCK 22 because it will KABOOM!

a big +1 14rds of .45 is great. I like the 17/19 also but not as much. Any handgun in a .40 is in last place for me. |

A G17 would be ideal primarily because of the cheaper ammunition. I have both a G17 and a G21. I use the G17 for practice and the G21 for the "serious" stuff hat

Wow - this was a really tough call for me. I'm going to go ahead and say G22, with the 17 very close behind or almost on par. I find the frame size of either to be perfect for "all around" use. Looking at stopping power between the 9 and .40, .40 has a good track record, but that said I would take no issue in choosing 9 with a premium defense load, and with 18-20 (with +2 ext.) rds on deck, you'll stay in the fight and have plenty of ammo to get the job done . As for the 21, it is definitely a brick and for me gets edged out in how it handles vs. the "standard" Glock frame seen in the 17 and 22. I can shoot mine well - just not quite as well as my 22.

G20 - 15 rds of 10MM goodness and you can add deer hunting to your list of potential uses.

I'm new to glock as well as carry. I picked up a G26. I love it. Shoots nice and hides well. Just make sure you pick up the mag extender.

The G21 is an outstanding pistol. The only drawbacks would be that it's the hardest of the three to conceal, and it requires a fairly large hand.

Unless you are a very big person avoid the G21 for CCW, also it can be more than a handful if your hands arent that large I would opt for a G17 for regular use and a G19 for CCW.

For concealing the G17 or G22 try the comp-tac C.T.A.C.
It is one of the best concealment holsters available. |

i would say the g22 with an extra 9mm conversion barrel. you can also get a 357 sig barrel. don't forget this is the #1 police pistol in america.
the g21/20 are just too big for most people. there is nothing bad anyone can say about the g17 but i think the g22 has more options. |

The Glock 21 has HUGE grips. It feels like a 2x4 to me. Make sure you have large hands if you buy it.
It's my opinion that the .45 belongs in the 1911 platform only (and the 220 to a lesser extent). |
