every time I try to shove the rounds home my thumb drags on the striper resulting in blood shed is there a trick other than a glove or building up some calluses on thumb?

Oh, OK. I just don't press my thumb against the stripper clip. If you keep your thumb as close as you can get without touching the stripper clip it should work fine with no loss of limb
