Will 5.56x45mm ammunition work in the 223 VEPR rifle? I have heard that it does not.

it will don't worry. I have a veprII in .223 and I shoot xm193 all day long. it has a 5.56 chamber. I emailed robarms the same question when I first got it. enjoy ur vepr

Yep I have a 16" carbine and it is no problem.

all combloc .223 aks are built with a military chamber, i.e. 5.56
(at least, I've never heard of one that wasn't)

.223 is an American sporting caliber, rarely will you see any military style rifles in that chambering (ASA "match" AR barrels and the like are the exceptions)
