The MAK's have some of the best dark blueing of any ak's. IMO

I agree they aren't that great. I would include mine as well.

Gotta say mine isnt bad either, its been abused to an extent (Hey, its an AK) and is still holding up great, after a good cleaning, like new.. Almost.

Mine is mediocre at best...Still intact...but marginal.

I wish it had been Parkerized from birth, but you can't choose your parents.

Is there such a thing as home-blue-ing?

There are a few manufacturers of bluing kits to be purchased and used at home. Re-bluing anything on this scale is not easy.

IMHO I think this whole bluing thing is being taken out of context.

The chinese ak's have very nice bluing, I own one myself. I went to a gun store the other day and held a vector that looked like it had a rattle can finish on it. So it depends on what you like, but in no way have I truly seen a nicer finish on an ak then my nhm91.

I bought a used MAK90 a little while back at a pawn shop, the finish is pretty worn and in some spots (Receiver cover, sides of receiver, and front sight block) is lightly pitted. Functions perfectly but looks rough, I'm thinking of de-greasing it and throwing a krylon rattle can finish on it.

Well, it is in pretty nasty shape and I don't want to sink much more money into it then I have to. Already changed it up to be 922r compliant with TAPCO G2 FCG and some used Bulgarian knockoff (US made) furniture, and a Romanian folding stock.

I just lucked into an unfired Mak 90 fro $200. THe catch is it sat in a safe in the guys basement for 10 years and was rusted to shit on the outside. The inside were fine. I stripped it and sprayed it with truck bedliner spray. This AK is going to be my beater. When I took it apart prior to refinishing there were no marks or carbon on the bolt, carrier or piston. The guy originall ywanted $400 for it before he realized it had rusted. The original finsih was a light bluing

For what it's worth...I have seen both crappy and excellent blueing on my MAK90's. I just recently did the Home blueing thing with my hunter conversion. I bought the birchwood-casey blueing kit...complete with blue remover, degreaser, and blueing. pretty simple...but no matter how many coats of blueing, the reciever(which I blued to match the rest) is still just a shade lighter than the top cover and barrel.

The one I have is nice and dark.  I don't clean it often and it hasn't rusted.

I had a Mak 90 with not so great finish. I used flat black Alumihyde on it. Tough as nails.
My NHM 90 has a real nice blue finish on it.
