Hey Mak,

I have two of them and think they are by far the best stamped AK.  I put the K-Var NATO black stock set with the heat shield in the hand guard and a G2 FCG on one and never looked back.  It's my shooter and the other one is unfired.

BTW:  It uses the same gas piston as the AMD-65.  Another option would be to get the blonde wood stock from one of the SA-85's kits that came in recently, keep the hand guard and replace the FCG, gas piston and grip.  There's your five parts and you have the nice blonde wood.

Great find.  My buddy bought a bunch of them when they were available in the SGN for $289 and sold them a couple years ago for $500.  I got mine for what he paid though.

Very nice find!  I love those Hungarian AK's.  I still regret not buying one about 15yrs ago when they were dirt cheap.  FEG really knows how to manufacture a fine firearm.

I have a pristine kit in the garage that I hope to build on a FEG receiver one day.  Seems I'm always a day late/dollar short when one pops up for sale.

Nice piece man.  I've always sorta wanted a thumbhole stock, but have large hands, so I've steered clear.

Anyway, I bought an SSR-56 from Armory USA, back when they were Arsenal USA during the AWB.  It came with the Hungarian 1mm FEG SK-100 receiver. It's rock solid. I hear the FEG's are one of the best out there.  True...???

Yep.  FEG's quality is easily the equal of Arsenal's stamped receivers.  FEG's usually have a better finish, too.

Good to know. Due to it's quality and rarity then, it sounds like it's something I should hold on to then for a long while. The receiver might make it worth a pretty penny to a Hungarian AK Junkie down the road.

A damn nice rifle - I have three :)  First things first:  Replace the FSB - thread muzzle while it's off.  This gives you a cleaning rod stop & lets you add a brake.

Purists would replace the Gas Block as well, in order to gain a bayo lug.

It's likely you will want to add a US trigger group and piston - 922R now kicks in.

Finally - stocks - the US trigger & piston give you FOUR parts... get a US clone brake (conventional or '74 style...)  That gets you to FIVE.  You'll need SIX - so even if you find a nice blond Hungarian set?  You'll need a US grip.

I would consider making all this easier... IronWood now advertises US made Hungarian Beech sets - that would get you THREE parts, and the right wood.  This, and a US trigger group?  Your 922R Golden :)

How about one of my refinished laminated stocksets?
That AK deserves Blonde wood! Nice find.

If you decide to go with the OD Kvar here is an idea of what it will look like for you.  I have mine for sale now, but thinking about deleting the ad and keeping it.

Mak?  That's Hungarian BirdsEye Beech... STUNNING wood.  Matt at IronWood is using this for his US copies.  You'll note that the hanguards are perfectly fine - and I wouldn't replace these with US parts unless I HAD to for 922R.  I've cleaned up several sets of these - they strip easily, and can then be restained to match with a US grip & stock (2 parts).  For a very close color match?  Consider Minwax Colonial Maple (no joke - it actually comes out pretty damn close to that unique "Orange" hue).  Top this with some Formby's Tung Oil treatment, and you will have some KILLER stocks :)

...a custom 223 with Hungarian Beech, refinished, as an example (yes, I got rid of the stupid rubber butt pad)...

Military Gun Supply had an 80% FEG AK receiver for like $80.  You might cal and see if you can haggle.

Also, if anyone has one, I'll swap my OD KVar NATO Length stock for an OD Warsaw Length stock.

Mak?  Be sure to TELL Matt that you want your grip inlet for the cap.... even if he did not do this, it's possible to do it on your own with a Dremmel (cut off wheel & sanding drums - but it's painstaking work).

OK - you want a NARROW grip cap.  Numrich Arms (EGunparts) sometimes has these.  If you can not find one?  Email me... you pay postage, I'll send you one of my spares.

This is my SA85M unbanned. It uses the standard length gas piston. I put Kvar stocks,
a Tapco Gas Piston and a G2 into it.
