I was going thru some old photos and found this one from a school trip to Germany. My brother snapped this one shortly after we cleared the E. German counterpart to Checkpoint Charlie. Too bad I didn't have a 5MP digital camera back then so I could have taken a clearer picture.

Looks like it was shift change!!!!
I have always wondered how much of a fight these losers would have put up against NATO-knowing that they were merely cannon fodder and a buffer for Russia??? They were basically a slave army. Also Poland, Bulgaria Hungary, Romania, etc. |

My dad used to work with a guy who was from Hungary. From what he told my dad the general consensus (at least among the enlisted) was that they weren't really keen on getting killed for the USSR if the ComBoc & NATO went at it. They planned on dragging their feet & otherwise staying out of the way if possible (no love lost for the Russians). There was a reason why the USSR had large #s of troops stationed in the other Warsaw pact countries, they didn't trust them. Remember that there were uprisings in both Hungary & Czechoslavakia that resulting in Soviet troops being called in. One of the first thing Poland & the others did post the collapse of communism is ask to join NATO. |

AH, yes, the "Ost".
Volkspolizei (Vopo). I went through there in '68, I think it was, while living in Wiesbaden as an AF Brat. I have some slides from Checkpoint Charlie, including me in the tower, scoping out the Vopo tower on the other side. I can tell you Charlie, East Berlin, and travelling through the Eastern Sector on the Flag Train to and from Berlin was pretty heavy duty stuff for a 12 yr old. DaddyDett |

That very well may be lunch in that cannister, but "officially"??? It's a DRAGER gas mask cannister.
It's funny, even though it's the year you mention they are carrying 7.62's and not 5.45's.

Ahhh yes the DDR. I just arrived in Germany as a young 18 year old Army Private in the summer of 1985. My wife who was my girlfriend at the time had next door neighbors who came over to the West when the Wall fell. They gave me these East German coins as souvenirs. I still have a brand-new East German Army helmet somewhere down stairs.

I have a pair of those as well. My kids use them fairly frequently. It is amazing that they have held up so well. I made about a dozen trips to Berlin while I was there in the late eighties. Berlin in those days was a great place to be a teenager. |
