I have a trade coming up and have to choose between a Maadi or a Chinese AK...both are 98% and comes with about 10 mags.

Maadi has Polymer stock and wood
Chicom has wood

Which one should I get???? I don't know enough to know I don't know.

Is the chinese a pistol grip or thumbhole?

The Maddi was made on Russian Equipment - so is closest to an original AK.

The chinese is - well , a chinese copy

Seriously - get the one that is in better condition.

Thanks guys...I think I'm about to enter a new realm of collecting. I've been doing SKS's, Ar-15's, then Garands and now looks like AK's...hey might as well...I love learing about a new firearm and the AK seems to offer quite a challenge...with all the models and variations....the possibilities seem endless.

More info on the Chicom unit: the guy says it is a Pre-Ban, pre-89 type 56. ??? Pistol grip stock.

Does that help with anything...tell me what I;m looking at here.

Chinese are great guns. Maadi's are great guns, and as stated above, some if not all were made on Russian machinary by Russian trained techs. If the Maadi is a nice quality rifle with good fit/finish I would go with it.

If the Chicom is pre-89 and the Maadi isn't, go Chicom. What kind of Maadi is it, if it's a pre-89 Steyr go with the Maadi ...

Yes I confimed that the Maadi is a pre-89 Steyer type.
Any idea on the value? Anything else I should be looking for?

Any way of telling what I have just by looking at the Maadi.

What is there to tell me it's a pre-ban? Receiver markings and such?

If it's pre-89 it will have Saracuse, NJ on the right front side ...

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think they go for around $900-$1200 range, new, like new, beat to hell, use your judgement ...

Here is the Deal

Chinese 56, Soft tactical case, 14 mags, and a tin of 700 Bulgarian rounds.

What more could you want?  Total package.....about $500.00 trade value

Also the rifle is Like New....Pristine is more like it....The wood color all matches perfect and all number match also.

Very nice rifle. Congrats! BTW, is the Maadi still available?

The Maadi ended up being an ACC/Intrac import from 1993 and I believe he was just gonna keep it.

Not sure what the value on one of those would be...it was real nice but the receivers are painted on them instead of blued....not real purdy.

Nice gun! I do hold a special place in my heart for the Chinese AKs. Not to burst your bubble,  but that one is a MAK 90 something, not a pre 89 gun.

Thats what I was thinking also. ... A MaK....But still a nice rifle. Just make sure you have to 5 USA made parts to be legal..... I had to say that.... Congrads on your new rifle. I have a Milled Mak that Im about to swap over to the correct look. Enjoy WarDawg

Well ....it's my first excursion into the AK world and I admit....I've got alot to learn. I started collecting SKS's then AR15's....then jumped into Garands and now the AK's....

There are so many types and variants....I had a local guy look at it and he says it's a MAK 90...I'm all screwed up....don't know what I'm talking about.
What is a MAK 90 anyway and what is a 56?

What ever the case....the rifle is very nice and super clean....I had no idea these Chicom rifles had such nice blueing on them....I had the impression that they were basically tin cans....wrong.

Now what do I get into....building my own?  I saw an AKM kit today for $99.00 shipped and it was discribed as "I don't think they have ever been fired" or Like New....I wonder if they have chrome barrels.

Anyway I could get a receiver, and such and only have about $235.00 into another AK.   hummmm
