Polish would be my guess. I had one very similar and it had a diamond stamp on it like yours. Mine was a much lighter color though.....

The first grip looks like a Chinese. I haven't seen any others that have the checkering other than Chinese and a Bulgarian in blonde wood with thicker grip.

The checkerd grip was covered with gunk when I got it ... I think the seller (and me) could see half of the diamond mark and thought it was a Russian stamp ...

Anyway ... Thanks for the opinions guys ...

It feels good in my hand !!! ... That's really all that matters ...

Seen a grip exactly like it on a Chinese underfolder pre ban AK-47, it was just a lighter colored wood.

nope its not ..its a solid peice of wood, from theheavy grain of the wood it almost looks like its a laminate..but its solid wood

Some early Russian type II & III AK-47's had wood checkered grips. Look closely at the Type II Russian underfolder in Masami's AK book.

It seems that Russian laminated grips were not checkered, while the solid wood ones were.

Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, and of course China also made the checkered type wood grips.

I know this one's Russian ... I ordered 2 from a guy in Russia when ebay was cool ...

This one is nice and fat ... the other one was skinny ???

I sold the skinny one ... wish I hadn't done that !!

The deeper cuts on it make me think it is chinese. I constantly see a chink underfolder hanging on the wall of my local gun store and the cuts on the grip are deep enough to see from the other side of the store no problem.
I still think it's chinese.

If you can't toss it all the way to Chattanooga, you better hang onto it then.Do you still need a Russian laminated grip, early AKM type?
