I'm considering converting a new Saiga 7.62x38 to AK folding stock and pistol grip. As the Saiga takes only 10 rd mags, I understand you must file the catch on an AK 30 rd mag to fit. Does anyone know if it is possible to weld the top of a Saiga mag to a 30 rd AK mag so fit is perfect? My father, a retired machinist, used to manufacture Thompson and Browning mags clandestinely during the Cuban revolution (long story) and claims this is possible.

Another possibility is manufacturing a custom mag from scratch on one of his sheet metal and milling machines.

Would this be illegal?
